2020 recruiting and commitments

Ethan West 6-4 225# 4* ILB is coming in next year. That will help. We do need depth there.

LB is my favorite position in football. If I could be any guy in the NFL, it would be Luke Kuechly.

Desmond Evans' Top 5 is UNC, VT, SoCar, Tennessee, and Florida. Fuente, Muschamp, and Pruitt all could be on the chopping block before the season is over.

Cayden Baker is a most interesting 3* recruit. He has played TE and basketball, which means he almost certainly would enter college with much better footwork than the vast majority of 4* OL recruits. Think of the 4* clods on the FSU OL and the Miami OL, just to stay in his home state.

Miami is the biggest name program to want him, but his offer list is growing and includes BC, Pitt, Cuse, Louisville, Indiana, UCF.

My guess is OU, but it is most interesting that UNC would be in a final 3 for a highly rated recruit with Bama and OU.
Sounds like there are some good reasons for us to be in the hunt.

"North Carolina: “We go way back. I have a few family members that went there. Coach (Stacy) Searels and I get along well. My grandmother's going to be moving down there soon. I really think that could be a good fit with me and I think they only have a few offensive linemen committed and I feel like if I go down there, I can make something happen.”

A lot of people have Parks pegged as a Sooner but it may not be as cut and dry as they think. North Carolina has been one of Parks’ favorite teams since he was a kid and he’s been on campus there more than the other two finalists.

And - Mack Brown, who knows how to recruit against OU.

Desmond Evans? I imagine that he is saying: If I had been in, I'd have stayed at Home on that 3rd down and made the stop.

Sadly what he’s more likely thinking is: “Man I wonder if clemson has a spot for me...”

We were the favorite tonight at home against a G5 team.

Mack's biggest challenge with this program is changing the culture.

These guys need to make up their minds, and either find a way, or...find an excuse

Will the injury to Ruder lead Mack to try to bring in a Grad transfer QB? Obviously, a top such QB in the portal is not going to want to risk sitting behind Howell and possibly Ruder (who if he could play without getting hurt right off the bat might show a great deal). But a sound QB who did his time in the MAC or Sunbelt or CUSA might want to be a UNC student and play for a Hall of Fame coach in a P5.

We're talking weeks or months at most, it isn't like amputation is occurring. So Mack would be pondering a Grad QB regardless of the Ruder injury since a Gr transfer couldn't get here til January.

I expect Ruder to transfer anyways. He's too talented to just be a backup to Howell for the rest of his college career, and it seems like the competition is pretty much wrapped up in the coach's eyes. Its very rare for a QB to lose the starting job after holding it down as a true freshman. I personally wanted to see him get more of a shot in game action, because I think he can be an elite QB. But that's also why I expect him to be gone next year. I hope I'm wrong though.

If Criswell comes through then I'd guess he'll be the backup next year if Ruder transfers.

Also, I guess it partly depends on how good we feel about Criswell and Boaz.
I assume you caught yourself after the first post.

I am talking about for next season. Unless Mack is confident that Criswell will be ready to go as true frosh and that we will have no more than 1 QB injured for any length of time, then he may well want to pick up a grad transfer QB for a worst case scenario.

If Ruder is on track to graduate in 3 years, then my advice would be to stay at UNC next season. Then he would be able to leave as a grad transfer with 2 years eligibility left, like Joe Burrow. leaving that way could make him a very hot item on the portal.
