Great post. What you said here is 💯 what drove Saban from college football, and I think it drove out K and Roy, largely too. Maybe Jay Wright, some in college football.I thought I would hate the portal, and I do from the standpoint of what it promotes. Like @Geth said, I don’t like the culture it has created.
With that said, I’m enjoying the “hot stove” of college basketball. It’s less college and more basketball and I’ve come to grips with that. I no longer really care about the players like I used to. I used to love to get recruits and watch them grow and develop as people and players over the course of their college basketball careers. That’s gone. I view them as hired mercenaries to help me enjoy my team winning; the same way I view the professional sports leagues I used to follow. It’s pure entertainment to me now and I’ve become hardened and indifferent to the players and their stories themselves.
Don’t @ me. I didn’t create this.
Saban especially spoke of how he used to recruit kids and he and his wife LOVED getting to know the kids and their families and building relationships and seeing them grow and develop over four years and being a big part in developing them as young men not just football players.
He says now it’s just about what coach and school can get the kid the most money this year. Period. Nothing more.
And nobody disputes that the colleges and coaches are making a ton of money too. It just seems like there should be a better way for the college players to get paid, AND somehow have a longer term commitment to the original school. They yearly grab bag, start from scratch with lots of new players is really hard for recruiting and fitting players in as a team.
And it’s not really best for coaches, colleges, fans and even the players in their long term development as well rounded young men, part sf a team and family culture. Which leads to the sentiment @gunslingerdick stated here - shared by most if not all college sports fans.
