Bowl Talk

I'm pleased with the direction, for sure. These guys bailing-out on the team when the team/school/coaches need them the most is just an unexpected downer. UNC is still going to have to prove they can win/beat, not just "hang with" teams.

Yep. Being competitive is the first step and now with consecutive top 15 classes — expectations will continue to rise. Good opportunity for younger guys to get experience and show what they can do. The good thing is they have two weeks to prepare the younger guys and maybe even get some injured guys back.

Chazz not playing may hurt a bit less than many of us think, but he also has not been as powerful a presence this year as he was last year. Maybe one of the young LBs will step up, but nobody has so far, not with even half consistency.

What young lb’s are you referring to?

as far as recruiting, i haven’t opened a school football program in years to read about a team...i also don’t sit in a stadium and look at all the signage about what year a team went to which bowl...in fact, does anyone really know how many stadiums or school programs put “x bowl champs” in bold lettering?

what i do know and appreciate is what carolina does at kenan with their former players as well as what other schools do...they advertise national titles, all-americans, conference titles, all-conference, heisman trophy winners, etc...basically individual awards or team titles.

imo, fans, recruits, parents of recruits, and high school coaches remember players and teams, not bowl games...does anyone here re-watch the gator bowl vs vatech or instead remember how dominant the players were on that defense?

as far as a&m, we’ll see how motivated they are from not getting into the cfp...i’ve seen it work that way as well.
This isn't the Gator bowl. I'm try to figure out why some people don't understand the significance of this bowl for this program. We haven't played in anything this important since 1950, other than the 2015 clemson game. This is a program defining game. If you understand the history of UNC football, then you should know how big this is.

These 3 guys have better things to do then fight with their teammates one last time. They've got to prepare for the NFL draft. Whatever that means during the holidays the next 2 weeks. Quitters plain and simple.

Hate to see these "men" leave before a bowl game after the university has made a big investment in their future. I guess it's more selfish on my part. I'm just a UGA alum with a love for my home state HEELS, Go Heels.

TBH, our chances were pretty slim to begin with, even before those guys opted out. I'll be proud if we can prevent a blowout.

The whole time everybody was pulling for an OB bid, I was thinking 'be careful what you wish for'. I have to agree with the other poster who thinks that if we get mauled, the perception will be that we didn't belong there to begin with.
With those three, we have a solid chance at the upset.

it kinda is now...the orange was a big deal, now it’s a rotational game or cfp leftover, or a selection...who knows until it’s designated.

my post wasn’t to de-emphasize the orange...it was to point out that recruiting will not be affected by the outcome.

It's a big deal to the UNC football program. This isn't hard to understand.

I was afraid of this happening. Was hoping a&m players would opt out and not ours. I understand both sides. The problem I have is that it’s the orange bowl not the music city bowl or some other turd bowl. This could be a catapult for even bigger things for this program. I fear we will have others to join the growing list. We have some talented backups but man what a game to make them first string.

Saw where Dabo voted OSU 11th in the coaches pole. Bulletin board material and they will need it.

So how many players from the final four teams will opt out? Probably very few. You can say well that’s a different game and a chance to win the NC. I don’t care. When you think about the potential and prestige of this game it should mean just as much. And not to mention we haven’t been to a major bowl like this since I believe it was the cotton bowl way back when.

The other side of the coin is I guess it’s better to have players competing at 100% rather than someone going less than that so they don’t get injured. Man we sure are going to miss them.

Winning a NY6 bowl in year two means we go back to being hyped as the new kid on the block. That could be the difference between being top 15 in recruiting and top 10. Everybody wants to play for a winner.

The third and fourth full classes that Mack puts together will determine if he can make a playoff run here. At that point we would have a depth chart full of four star guys with a few five stars sprinkled in. Winning this game definitely keeps on the path towards making that happen.

Even if you don’t think a loss would hurt, a win would definitely be a big boost for recruiting and locker room swagger.

Yeah, you’ll never convince me that our recruiting wouldn’t benefit from winning this game. The attitude on the A&M board is one of arrogance. I want soooooo badly to beat those guys. Jumbo will run this score up if he can.

With carter out time to see what Henderson can do. If I remember correctly he was a four star coming out of HS. The WR group is deep and talented so next man up.

It sucks that those guys aren't playing but we still have Sam and Javonte and Dazz and .... some talented young dudes that want to show what they can do. I think we'll be ok for this one game. Next man up. Go Heels!

^ Yes, pretty much next man up at this point. I try not to judge the motivation of these players because it has to be a tough decision for them. I can't imagine them sitting at home and watching the program's biggest game in 70 years with their families while their brothers slug it out. Personally, l would choose to play, play hard, live in the moment. Later in their lives, they may really regret being tagged as quitters (especially by some of their brothers-in-arms).

I don't disagree with that, but a chance is just a chance. As much as I love my Heels and believe in them, I wouldn't bet big money on us pulling an upset even with the three. What I'm really looking for is to see how well the replacements do, and I think they'll do fine. It's not like I'm predicting a blowout or even a loss, but to avoid either we will have to go in with a lot more fight than Miami gave us. And Longo can't be wrongo.

Some of ya'll are way too negative. Yes, they are more like Notre Dame in their physical line play but when we're playing our best, we're pretty good too. We'll see if our O-line comes to play and if they do, A&M is going to have a hard time stopping us regardless of Carter and Brown not playing.

Chazz not playing hurts but Bateman gets paid a lot of money for times like this. Maybe we can scheme around that a little and just maybe 4-star recruit Asante is hungry to show what he can do and has a stellar game.

Our D-line had gotten better as the young players get more pt and Big Ray gets some breaks. There's a reason we're only an underdog in Vegas by less than a touchdown. Come in and play all 4 quarters like we did against Miami, and we can . definitely win this game.

to play like we did against Miami, you have to have an opponent like Miami; and what I'm trying to say is exactly that, that A&M will be nothing like Miami.

And I'm probably not going to put my hopes in a performance based on how much the coach is getting paid.

All that being said I just hope we show well, win or lose.

As someone said on another thread, the outcome of this game is the difference between finishing 8th or 18th. That is huge for the returning players and the staff’s ability to sign big time recruits. I lost a little respect for those guys who are shutting it down. To risk playing the whole season with a pandemic going on, only to opt out of a historical bowl game for their university? That’s hard for me to justify, but then I’m from a generation when money wasn’t the end all, most important thing in life.

I wish them luck going forward nevertheless.

I'm old and don't understand why so many are upset. Outside the CFP games the bowls no matter how big they used to be just get us more practice time and see how much our young guys that'll be key to our success next year are ready to go. If we had finished 10-1 and barely lost ND then yeah we could be trying to prove like A&M that we should have been the 4th playoff team but unfortunately that isn't the case. Next year is our time to start having a chance for CFP so I'm ready to get that started. Gives us great feedback and coaching opportunities to prepare them for what will actually be important to our future success and recruiting.

I might have missed it but I don't think anyone is trying to convince you otherwise.;)

I can't think of any way that a win wouldn't be huge for us, and there's nothing better than wiping the arrogant smirk off the face of a team and its fanbase. We have been known for a very long time as the prominent school that will never be good in football, and if I could see that notion dispelled sometime before I die, I would die happy..

I was just disagreeing with @gteeitup.

very reasonable post

For those so upset at the 3 for opting out what will you think if Beau and Duck are pretty much able to play but coaches and players decide to hold them out so they can be ready for off season workouts to start and begin preparing for the 2021 season. Wouldn't that be opting out also?
