NC State at UNC game thread—-Saturday 21 January 2023

Was not a good statistical game for Caleb, but HE WAS HUGE !!!! His aggression and willingness to attack got put backs, free throws, had them on their heels. He and RJ attacked an aggressive ball pressure dee, which they have struggled with in the past.

Great game by the much maligned Mr. Love. That is an important hard fought win.

Yep Smith is very good
I didn't realize he was that hurt and seeing him go out on a gurney, like a football injury, was disturbing. And, NCSU had very little offense after that, until Burns came back. If Smith stayed in the game, I think it would have remained a back-and-forth.

Good to see the Carolina starting guards especially in the second half go strong to the hole and either score or get fouled instead of bombing from the outside. The free throw difference tells u all u need to know about which team was aggressive going to the basket…

Absolutely Smith is that good although Heels played solid D in 2nd half

It was quite inspiring how well the guards attacked in 2nd half...like a different team

Geez, dude. He made his FT’s. He did rebound for a change(5), and had 1 assist. But he was 3-14 from the field.(21%?). You’ve got a mighty low bar if that’s your idea of a great game.

When he sat in the 1st half State's pressure dictated. When he was on the floor they reacted, we attacked. No way he was sitting in the 2nd half, none. This is the type game people say he does not do, off scoring, was still the engine to push forward to a win.

He drew the attention 2 or 3 State bodies when he probed, was fouled often, including the missed dunk at the end of the half with 3 contesting, sent a message. No call, no problem he kept creating and others ate. 2nd half easy Mando put backs and fouls on those 3 -14. He drew the heat and did the heavy lifting. He played great, in a game that he wasn't "on" scoring.

we are now reaching a bit trying to give Caleb credit for Armando busting his tail to get in position for offensive boards and put backs. smdh. Caleb did some nice things but none of which were because of his continued poor shot selection and woeful shooting percentage.

a stronger argument could be made that we need him to shoot about 5-7 less shots a game and allocate those to post feeds to Bacot and some of these “close” games may not even be close.

That is not to take anything away from Mando, he is where he should be, and goes hard, but when the guard draws the big and he gets it on the glass anyway the clean up is much easier. The missed jumper is much more of a "busting of one's tail" to clean up.

Joel Berry was very good at late clock pinballing in the lane and missing but getting the ball on the glass over the helping big. Hicks and Meeks cleaned up nicely as Joel went bouncing on the baseline, often without a call, and only a missed shot in the stats to show for it statistically. Put backs off of deep drives takes that block out away to crash.

The way he was taken off the court, it looked like a season ending injury. Guess it wasn't that bad.
