OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

I guess it's just me, but I don't understand why everyone is so upset about what he did. There is nothing in the rule book that says a ref has to listen to a player critiquing him during the game. Hell, we don't even know what JB was saying. For all we know he could have said he was banging his wife.

It was unprofessional and disrespectful. There's an unwritten rule on pretty much any level that if a player wants clarification on a foul call in a dead ball situation, the ref obliges. And that's even more true for a 4 year guy that's been around long enough for every ACC ref to know him well. Unless Joel has been a shithead to Valentine in the past, there was absolutely no reason for him to do that other than to show him up. And that's a dick move.

Looked like he didn't say anything yet but just turned to talk to him. Besides the fact that Berry was correct (which doesn't really matter) he is a four year two time FF MVP who is generally well respected by everyone. Teddy could have just told him he wasn't going to listen to it, which happens. I've never seen an official do what he did though. Seemed pretty over the top to me.

Just because JB has accomplished so much doesn't mean that he should be given special treatment. His actions being a "dick move" and/or "over the top" isn't a reason to fire him. If he's breaking rules then that's one thing, but being a dick isn't something to be fired over. If this was Grayson Allen, I suspect radar would have a different reaction.

No one said he should be given special treatment. He was given the opposite of that. He was treated in a way other players aren't, not that I've ever seen and during a college season I watch multiple games a night and have for years.

I also never said he should be fired. That would be even more over the top.

I'm certainly not calling for Valentine to be fired. Nor did I see @coryfly do that. You stated that you didn't see what the big deal was. He and I simply spoke to that. Valentine's behavior was odd and unprofessional. And yes, JB should get special treatment. He's a 4 year guy that these refs should know well by now. He's always conducted himself in an appropriate manner. He's never been T'd up or exhibited any kind of behavior that shows any ref up. He's the captain of our team. Grayson Allen is a poor comparison because he has indeed stepped out of line on several occasions. You should have used Bonzi.

@gunslingerdick did and you imply it when you talk about how he is a senior.

I was referring to the thread on radar where people were saying he should be fired.

See above.

He's never been T'd up
He was last year vs Miami.

I think him being a well respected senior should insulate him from being treated less than other players, though I do actually tend to agree with GSD that guys that have been around should be given at least a little more leeway than other unknown or notoriously hot headed guys. He was in fact give less leeway and treated remarkably worse than other players.

He did get a T against Miami but that was pretty mild. It was a little bit of an overreaction by the ref and Roy IMO. Still, one T in four years doesn't counter a long playing career of not being a prick to officials.

I'm not saying it does. Just correcting the record.

Joel was held on the play and was not happy about it. Neither was I. What Valentine did was unprofessional and dick-ish. Obviously He doesn't deserve to be fired; that's an extreme reaction. But he should be held accountable for his actions, however that is normally handled.

My problem is w how Valentine acted. If he would have engaged Joel and told him to shut it he’s not gonna hear it that’s one thing. But he turned his back on him and crossed his arms staring at the crowd. Not only disrespectful IMO but very unprofessional too. Do I think he should be fired? Hell no but what he did chapped my ass something bad.

I hope I am dead wrong here, but, I believe we're in for a tough, tough game this afternoon, and one that we may lose by double digits.

I’m on the other side of the spectrum Bill. I have this funny feeling we pull this one out. But you’re damn right it’s gonna be a very tough game.

You'd think after the 1st weak pass is stolen for a mad dunk, they might decide to be more careful with the ball.

Freshman probably not going to do much against UVA and their D. Just not ready for it.

don’t laugh, but i just wanna make the tournament after the success of the last three years.

and the last two years didn’t raise my expectations so much as it confirmed my belief that the program was okay, if that makes any sense.
