OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

You said we’re not as good as we used to be. That’s funny bc we just came off a national championship. Again what do you realistically expect? To go 40-0 and win the ship each year?

If you mean “we’re not as good as we used to be” to mean compared to last year then ..no shit.

Well yeah of course. But it still hurts to lose like that.[/QUOTE]

So you’re just venting. Got ya. Not trying to be a dick. I’m pissed off too.

I doesn't "hurt to lose like that." It would have hurt if we had gotten blown out of the building. To lose like we lost was the BEST way to lose ANY game. Like when we lost to Nova in '16... that was the BEST way to lose a game. When it's down to the wire? And, you lose? I'm fine with that loss. Especially given that we had a 7-0 streak against FSU and FSU had a 27-0 streak going at home.

I couldn't have custom-ordered a better loss than that.

Guys, I really have to ask this because we can have discussions like this over here without a mob of idiots descending on us.

Do you think our lack of elite recruiting is catching up to us? In my opinion, it is. And will continue to, especially if we don’t land a highly ranked big man.

I think Bradley leaving was a surprise and left us vulnerable down low with the young bigs. They haven't progressed enough to make a difference yet. But yes, another elite big recruit would definitely help.

I said this on Radar earlier and I"ll see it again here - I love Maye, but he needs to pass the ball more when he's in trouble down low. Guys are putting a body on him and he's not good enough yet to force a shot through contact.

We need it. Badly. I’m not saying Brooks and Manley won’t become good players. But it’s going to take awhile. Thank God that Nassir Little, Coby White and Rechon Black are coming next year

Yes. It will get better next year but you’re right. We really really need a highly ranked big man to make an impact right away.

I agree. The recruiting was down because of the investigation, but that's over now. We should be able to get better low post recruits now.

Cmon, we all know it's dook and Kentucky paying their players. Doh

I’d love to believe that but no proof as of yet haha.

I really think a good portion of it has to do with Roy. His style of basketball does not fit the current NBA mold. He does not have an NBA all star to his name. And the big men under his charge have not been quite as successful as they were under Dean. And because Roy is so damn stubborn, I feel like we will continue to miss out on top big guys.

I feel like it’s more than just the scandal.
Roy prefers upperclassmen and plays them over freshmen. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that but if you're an elite recruit and your goal is to showcase your skills and get to the league asap it isn't very appealing. Scandal didn't help much and just happened to coincide with Duke and UK going all in on one and dones and being successful at getting them drafted highly so imo it isn't just one thing it's a culmination of several.

If Bradley would have stayed, we're the favorites to repeat, IMO. However, him being gone is going to work wonders for the development of Brooks and Manley, especially Manley. Those two will be able to become top contributors a lot sooner now. Huffman's improvement will have to come over the summer. He just needs to learn how to catch the ball and really learn the basics of post play.

We also have a problem with overall depth. Other than Cam, we don't have anyone reliable coming off the bench. Everyone else is hit or miss and so far it's more miss.

Before the scandal we had Brice, Henson, Hicks, Meeks, etc. Things will pick back up. I like the bigs on the roster. They're just not ready yet for big time ACC competition.

Brice and Meeks weren't really guys big time programs were going after and Hicks was always coming here. I think that is all correct at least. Someone can correct me if not. Most elite OAD guys aren't coming so Roy needs to hit on these good players that aren't looking to be featured so much as freshman. Though this year one of those guys, like a Magley, would have been featured. He just preferred to lose to some midmajor in the first round. To each his own.

You're correct, and I think the guys on the roster have the potential to get to their level. The problem is, we have to play them now and against teams with better front courts.

Yeah, we've always had guys to let other guys learn. This year the guys learning are the guys playing. They are going to struggle all year, though I would rather see Manley than Brooks right now.

Yeah, Brooks looks completely lost at both ends right now.

It also continues to be odd that Kenny Williams shoots so well in the first half and then can't seem to make much in the second.

1 - That was a hell of a game. We played well and IMO, we were the better team through 40 minutes. They got the whistle and we didn’t. It happens. But anyone that watched that game knows we’re a very good team that is capable of beating anyone. Not at all discouraged by this loss. Team showed a lot of grit. I love the experience of our core guys.

2 - I agree that Bradley would make us contenders and it’s a real shame he’s not around. But I disagree that “our recruiting is catching up with us. I think Roy really likes the state of our program and the system he’s built through supposed “down recruiting” years. While other programs have adapted to the OAD era, so has Carolina, but in the completely opposite direction. Most blue bloods have tweaked things to make their programs conducive to the OAD culture, while Carolina has shifted more towards long term player development. You can argue that the shift was born out of necessity, and I’d mostly agree. But regardless, I think Roy likes it, especially now that it’s shown to be kind of the kryptonite to freshman laden teams.

I’m not saying that Roy isn’t recruiting top 10 guys. I’m sure he is...with all his might. And we’ll sign one of those guys every now and then and I reckon we’ll have another OAD soon enough. Sheer numbers would suggest that. I’m just saying I believe Roy is perfectly content with the consolation of having to sign slightly lower ranked guys that will stick around for 3-4 years and be total program guys. And until I see multiple underperforming years, I’ll trust the process.

Jay Wright and Roy Williams, ...you know, ...the last two national champion head coaches, might argue with that.
Those teams were made up of lower ranked 3-4* players? Not sure about Villanova but UNC surely wasn't unless you consider Hicks, Berry, Jackson, Paige, etc. lower ranked 3-4*s. Citing one player (Maye) doesn't mean the team(s) was (were) "made up" of them.

Lower ranked is certainly subjective, but by any measure, they were 3-4 year players. And none of them were of the OAD mindset. They were of the player development mindset and they entered the program as such and approached their collegiate careers as such. No different than the guys we have on this year’s team. No different than the guys we’ll have on next year’s team. And most likely, the years after that. Just as Roy drew it up.

He's a reverse Paige. His defense is excellent for the whole game though. Best defender we've had in a while.

Well said. The Heels will be fine. This is just a slight rebuilding year after a championship season. The bigs are young, but they will develop into productive players just like Meeks and Hicks did. Jackson was also a big loss for this team. Cam is the closest thing to a replacement, but he doesn't bring the same skill set. Roy will bring in the recruits needed to compete for another title.

Good lord. Now we have a thread devoted entirely to one official with people saying he should be fired. Seems like some of those people had a different take on that when UK fans were complaining.

The officiating was bad last night, but it happens. Nothing can be done about it now.

I would say the guys we have on the perimeter are very similar to what we've had for a while. The bigs are not. Even though no one expected Brice, Meeks, or Hicks to be OAD they were definitely better than the group we have now. That is what is hurting this team the most on both ends. It makes no sense why some of these big guys don't come here where they will get touches and, as even most analysts agree, great development at that position.

I haven't read it and I'm sure it is over the top but it would not surprise me if Valentine faces some sort of reprimand for what he did to Berry. He has been in some trouble before for being a dick.

I guess it's just me, but I don't understand why everyone is so upset about what he did. There is nothing in the rule book that says a ref has to listen to a player critiquing him during the game. Hell, we don't even know what JB was saying. For all we know he could have said he was banging his wife.
