I haven't done the availability thing in a while...we get 13 scholarships:

Likely to definite: Trimble, Washington, Nickel, Shaver, RJ, Puff, Styles
50/50: Ant, Dunn, McKoy
Likely gone: Leaky, Bacot, Caleb, Garcia, Kerwin

So in that scenario, we could take back all of the 50/50s and 3 of the likely gone. So yeah, we have room next year for everyone but Garcia and Kerwin, assuming they are already out the door.

I think Ant is back. Bacot coming back would not surprise me. He's a great student and loves UNC. He may want a year of Grad school for free. Love will have to go the G league route I think. Wouldn't mind Garcia coming back.

I'd move Leaky into the 50/50 group.

And while I appreciate you running the numbers, it's almost not about that. If Hubert is going to have such a small bench, then other guys are not going to be on the team just to have good seats for games. So really, instead of 13, we probably need to figure what it looks like at 10.

I'm curious if he goes deeper into his bench as he becomes more comfortable coaching and as he starts to bring in his own guys.

I could easily see him saying that Kerwin/Dunn/Styles weren't guys he would have recruited and they are Roy's guys. If he's keeping his own 4 stars on the bench next year and in 23 then you're right, he's just not going to ever go 8-9 deep.

I think the coaching comfort thing is real though. Hubert is almost trying to win every single minute of every single game. He's so fired up and passionate that he values winning that minute over getting guys time or giving his best guys a rest. I'm sure some of that comes with the pressure of first time coaching at the school you love. I think that will change a bit next year.

Let's hope. One of my favorite things about our program under Roy was our depth. Depth and rebounding were probably my two favorite staples of Roy's teams. It's sad to watch them fade away. I'm not saying you can't be successful playing only 6-7 guys but they better be serious ballers with superhuman stamina. 3 and 4 stars ain't that. So if Hubert is going to play so few, then his recruiting better pick up.

I dunno why he plays with mostly... or only... 5 guys. That is a huge departure from the way RW and DES coached their teams. It's gotta be a risky choice when you're playing tournaments. Unless he has some kind of Norman Dale wizardry happening.

The only one that I feel absolutely certain is gone is Dawson Garcia. The rest are toss-ups. Kerwin Walton has looked awful, for the most part, whenever he gets on the floor. Styles is the only freshman that looks competent. Harris would be in the rotation if he hadn't lost eligibility because of his grades. He's fervently on the bench at every game, and UNC has helped him rehab and given him a lot of chances. Walton, McKoy, and Dunn are all liabilities when they are on the floor. If they wanna leave, that would be addition by subtraction. That portal will be loaded with people to take their place. The portal will be the new x-factor, I think. Look at what VT got from it!
 
Short bench will really come back to bite you in tournament play. Doesn’t really matter unless you can win long enough for it to become relevant though

I’m not sure that matters. If Bacot doesn’t see the potential for enough dollar signs, I think he’ll come back. If he thinks he can start making good money elsewhere, I think he’ll leave. But I don’t think a POY award has any bearing. But I’m hoping he wins it. He deserves it. We’d be in the cellar without him.

seemed to me like the announcers at the last game thought it was almost a foregone conclusion Bacot would be POY, but I wasn't hearing everything they were saying. Maybe it's just me.

I won't lie, I'm a bit concerned that duke has enough to win the title, especially with the benefit of the whistle they will undoubtedly get all tourney because of it being K's last year. There are no overwhelming teams. If the ball bounces right, duke could sneak into the FF and then who knows.

by the same token, many teams could find their mojo against dook, and thankfully there are refs who don't like K's badgering and potty mouth. I'm more worried that they'll be given a marshmallow path.

My dream has always been for us to make the tournament as a lower seed, and then be the one to take them out of it.

The talent is better but not like our 2009 team versus a mid major. The disparity is not that great. And as far as motivation, it would seem odd that a team that is comfortably in and sitting on the 1-2 seed line has more motivation than a team that is on the bubble. Coaching?

Regardless, I too think we get curbed stomped.

Do those players even care? I mean, it's not like Hurley and Laettner are in their last home game under a coach they've been with for 4 years. These are rented mercenaries that have no more investment in duke than the man in the moon and probably no closer relationship with K than I have. But I don't doubt K is leveraging all he can for his big send off. Imagine having to facilitate your own retirement party.

k will definitely not fail to reach into his bag of slimy tricks if he sees the need, and of course the refs will respond to that like sheep. That being said, your assessment of the dook players is as spot on as it gets.
 
Two questions for the board.. if Duke is favored by 16.5 do the Heels cover? I say no.

If Duke plays Auburn for the National Title who are you cheering for? This would be the worst match up for a Heels fan. I'll go with the Tigers.
