OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

Exactly, if they admittedly have no jurisdiction over the quality of classes how can they have a prob with who enrolls in them?
Yep and another problem the NCAA has is that they didn't say what students got the impermissible benefits. How can you say students got benefits without being able to point to a student. This is a pretty good article from Staples that talks about some of the issue for the NCAA.

How can it be an impermissible benefit if the class was open to all students? Many colleges have classes that are for athletes only, isn't that an impermissible benefit??

That was an argument that UNC made. They actually gave a couple of examples from other schools the NCAA cleared. Can't remember which ones.

According to ncaa, reg students had to go thru crowder or whats his name..gorybotswana..to enroll, whereas athletes just had to email. Plus advisors got assignments and turned in athlete’s work for them. Yea i know...THE HORROR!!! For chrissakes the ncaa knowingly turned a blind eye to criminal felony bribery while spending most of a decade deciding that emailing a prof after enrollment deadline to get into his class is bad.

When i was at unc all the athletes majored in political science and damn it was hard af to get in one of those classes. Then there was astronomy which was supposed to be slack. I took it and loved it. One of the few classes that gave me knowledge i still use today on a clear starry night with my kids.

I took a walking class in school. Seriously, the name of the class was walking. It consisted of going to the track twice a week to walk, not run, a mile and keeping a journal of our time. We also talked about healthy eating for about two minutes before each "class."

I took a film class with Larry Drew and the news of his transfer broke when he was supposed to be in that class. He was in there every day until that, though.

ETA: I also took a psych class with Marvin Austin, and I'm 99% sure he tried to cheat off my test once. Bad move on his part, I didn't do great in that class.

I think we are all shocked to find out you took a film class.

I once took a "History of Rock 'N' Roll" class at App State, and it was the most brain dead easy thing I've ever done. Guess I need to give up my Bachelor's Degree.
To add to this, about 90% of our exams consisted of the prof playing a clip of a song, and we had to write down what it was. It was essentially the audio version of the "Name That Song" thread. Good class.

I had a similar class at UNC, it was like "20th Century American Music" or something to that effect. I did a summer session and took one that was "Music of the Stage and Screen" that was the same sort of thing except it was all musicals and opera. But those exams were right in line with what you describe.

It was pretty fun. We had to fill out a thing on the first day of class about our favorite movies. Larry's was Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. If that doesn't tell you what you need to know about him, I don't know what does.
Another Michel Bay film featuring...

So then what? Is it expected that UNC takes it to court? Or is that dependent on the severity of the penalties?
There is an appeals process through the COI. Once the NCAA denies the appeal then we go to court assuming the penalties are severe. I think anything more than a one year post season ban and we will take them to court. If they try to take away banners, then we definitely go to court. I think it's going to be at least another year before this thing is actually over.

Showing my age here, but my last semester in college I had 1 class left to take in order to graduate, but needed 12 hours to stay in the dorm. So I took gun handling, (Yes, you read that right) where we shot skeet and reloaded shotgun shells, canoeing and rock climbing. I have hunted all my life and shot skeet since I was old enough to hold a shotgun, my dad owned a canoe shop growing up and we were on every river in NC once or twice a year and I already knew how to climb and rappel, so ....

Point is, EVERY school has easy classes and everyone knows how to find them.

Still, it is pretty obvious the NCAA knows it has nothing to stand on with the class difficulty, so they are going to try to prove MBB and football athletes were able to get into these classes easier and had someone turn in their stuff for them, thus those were impermissible "benefits". I think this is all they can come at us for at this point. Aside from WBB and soccer, both of whom seem to have gone further down the dark path, I haven't seen anything else.

Question is what punishment will they try to hit us with? THAT seems to be the one thing everyone is looking at. ABCer's can scream "cheat" and "bogus classes" all they want, but even the NCAA concedes that the classes were legit and they don't have jurisdiction (nor do they want it) to dictate the difficulty or content of classes. So, they have to decide if it is worth hammering us for as much as they can now and most likely losing their shirt in court later or deal with the cat calls from ABCer's and let this thing finally be put to bed.

Like most here, I could probably live with a 1 year post season band and maybe a scholarship or two for a year in MBB and football along with some fine, provided it isn't ridiculous. I won't like it, but I couldlive with it if it means putting this to bed once and for all. Beyond that, I want UNC to fight and take this to court and not settle.

I have about 6 hours to kill. I think I'll go read some at Rupp Rafters.

Lol, just visit the main basketball board. I can give you some specific names to look for. The main guy had a mental breakdown and had to take some time off after the second NOA kind of took us off the hook. I bet he gets institutionalized this time.

Man,...good thing we were warned by all those insiders that it was going to be bad. I don't know if I could have taken this news if I hadn't been prepped. lol

Here's the link to a thread at RR. One guy said he wished our whole athletic department would get syphilis. Another said he wanted to dig up Dean Smith and punch a hole through his decaying skull. No shit.

But what pleases me the most out of all this, is knowing that guy @DevilDJ is standing on a ledge somewhere wondering how he could have better spent his free time over the past 7 years. His anguish is worth the shit we've been through.

Someone get over to @DevilDJ's place and hide all the sharp objects before he is released from the asylum.
