OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

I agree for the most part. But at the same time none of us here would want a situation like Bob Huggins at Cincinnati back in the early 00s where every other day one of his players was getting arrested for something. Winning is the ultimate goal, but I thank heavens Roy is a good man and really goes out of his way to care for his players.
Yes, Roy is a good man (albeit with terrible political beliefs). Of course we want our head coach to be a good dude who recruits good dudes, cetebus parabus. Grooming players to be good members of society is certainly important since this is collegiate sports, not professional. But it won't save your job if you aren't winning. Winning is the paramount aspect of a CBB coach's job.

Agreed.

This is Carolina Basketball. Neither winning nor running the program with class is sufficient without the other.

Theoretically anyway. We’re just lucky we’ve had two very honorable men run the program since the early 60s.

I feel like it's coincidence rather than mandatory that Carolina Basketball be run "with class." It just so happens Dean and Roy were super classy dudes. I really don't think folks would mind if a, say Calipari-type personality came in and manned the ship, if we won a lot.

ETA: @carolinablue34 said the same thing above.

Make that 3.... Bill Guthridge qualifies. Not so sure about Matt though.
Matt was fine. Let's not get into the Doherty thing. It still disgusts me how our fanbase treated Matt, a STARTER ON A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM, mind you.

I'm glad I was fairly young when all that went down. If I had been older, I may have blown a gasket. You do not treat family like that, ever.

I respectfully disagree. If a slime-ball like Cal was our coach, I'd step away from caring about UNC basketball until he was gone.

Ah I see you're employing the gunslingerdickian argument where you take your personal reaction to something and extrapolate it to the entire populace. Well played, sir.

It was sarcasm. I like Doh
I love Doherty. Would love to see him brought back and honored somehow. The way our fans treated him is the reason I'm so hostile toward some Radar types and scoff when I hear things like "Carolina Basketball is family."

Bullshit. What they mean is "they're family.... as long as we're winning." At that time, Doherty was a starter on one of only three (not counting the Helms trophy for this argument) national championships we had.

The fans did Doherty dirty, regardless of how Doherty fared. It didn't sit well with me and still doesn't.

I thought it was McCants n company who basically ran Doh out. Hated seeing the players have that much influence on what happened w the head coach.
McCants had a lot to do with it, but players can't run off a coach by themselves. Powers that be turned on Doherty pretty quickly.

Doherty's name should always be linked to the 2005 championship, since he recruited May, McCants, and Felton.

I’m playing devils advocate here: would you still feel that way if a guy like Cal was pulling in insane recruiting classes every year?
With the baggage he had (although he has that teflon ability where everything slides off), I wouldn't be able to support him regardless of his accomplishments.

And I know it's been discussed as naseum but I would hate to be a Kentucky or even dook fan where you have a new batch of stars every year. They come and go so quickly, you never get to see them grow.

I don't speak for the fanbase, but I would mind. I'm not gonna sit here and claim I'd stop watching or wouldn't continue to be a fan, but the way the program represents the university is equally important to winning, to me. I'd still enjoy winning a lot, but not nearly as much as I'd enjoy winning a lot with a coach and program I can be proud of, independently of the winning.

The Doherty discussion is old hat at this point. I don't mind you being upset with the fanbase about how Doherty was treated, and to some extent I agree. But you also have to hold Doherty somewhat responsible for how he treated the program and handled the transition. Neither side was blameless.

No, neither side is blameless. But you give a national champion the benefit of the doubt. It is a warning to future ADs (regardless of school) to be careful when hiring former players. For instance, if UT hires Tee Martin. That could turn sour quick and would force a fanbase to turn on a beloved figure.

You guys had no business beating us that year. The smackdown we laid out in Cameron was evidence of that. Which made the first game that much more painful. But I'll give you this much, K does a much better job pulling out those close ones than Roy. I can think of 5 different games this decade we should have beaten you where you guys just closed it out at the end.

That's one of my few gripes with Roy, it just doesn't seem like he wants to beat Duke as much as K wants to beat Carolina.

Just remember K coaches to win every game no matter the cost. Roy places value on the players sticking to the principles he's taught them. If they can't execute on the process, then we lose. @gunslingerdick and I had some good chats on this. With Roy, trust the process. The process is more important than the result. K is the opposite. He will deploy anything at his disposal to win.

Do you think the fans should apologize to Bunting?

Did Bunting play on a Carolina national championship team as a player? Did he recruit a class as HC that eventually won... anything? Bunting was given a substantial amount of time (read: too many seasons) to prove himself.
You make up weird definitions with which to live your life by.

Matt made a ton of mistakes, fired good people, and was abrasive to fans and reporters. He brought in some nice pieces, but he had to go.

Last I checked, Matt hasn't been ex-communicated. He's still involved.

You have your opinion; I have mine.

I know it irritates G7, but I love a game like this where the refs let them play physical. So much better for the flow of the game. Robinson looking good in transition!

Berry’s passing (or lack thereof) is concerning to me. A few times someone comes off a screen for a potential open3 look and he doesn’t pass it in time.
