OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

Seth Greenberg (and others) have also summed-it-up really well- UNC is a totally different team from last year.

It really cannot be overstated just how much talent we lost and how the whole chemistry has been affected. UNC without a go-to big guy is not going very far. And, I'm really not looking forward to February at all. We still have another 4-5 more losses coming.
And most rational people knew that was the case and that it was going to be a difficult year in UNC terms...

.Every team we face plays harder then they do normally because they want to beat THE DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPS!!!!!

Winning on the road is tough in any conference this year and we ran into a buzz-saw tonight but it’s ok

Jay and Seth’s postgame review hit the nail right on, just played so lazy and didn’t look like that UNC team we all know.
We can only hope that this piss-poor mid-season performance makes Roy and the staff tear them all a new asshole and they fight and play hard from here on out.

Of course it's okay. This team was never even going to sniff a repeat without Bradley.

It's time's like this we can console ourselves thusly:

Sooo you could tell Jalek was pissed when he went out right before the 4:00 mark. He had a crappy defensive effort and then a not so good shot from three. He wouldn’t even dap Berry up coming into the game. So the question is.. is the pissed off at how poorly he’s playing? ... or pissed off at how short his chain is?

Probably both, but he knows the limited time is due to his limited production so he's madder at himself.

He should be pissed at both. If he isn't, he's not a fierce competitor.

After that "just like football" chant the crowd made it would be extra satisfying if we kick their ass next fall.

Yup. He could've made us a contender but without him we're looking at a round of 32/16 exit. That's not a bad season with this personnel. Hard not to be spoiled.
I'm not even so sure about that. We would certainly be better off with him, but I'm not convinced we'd be a contender. Not one of the freshman behind him would give us the kind of minutes he did last year when we needed to rest a big. We'd end up having to go small a lot and you see how inconsistent that is for us now.

Sooooo... speaking of Jalek, when do we start to worry about the dreaded "T" word, or more likely, the dreaded "GP" phrase...? It's either a legitimate concern right now, or it's very, very close to becoming a legitimate concern, IMO.

I don't see that happening. If anyone transfers it will be 7th.

I'm not sure people will agree but I think Jalek is maybe a little mad that Berry is kind of making the same mistakes Jalek is sometimes but Felton gets pulled the second he makes one. Now, he has to understand he is a freshman and Joel is a proven (extremely proven) senior who also still makes big plays. I think there is a little bit of that maybe, probably more just mad at himself though. Regardless, if you watch him on the bench he is as enthusiastic as anyone. When Na scored the other day he was as excited as anyone else and is always like that over there. I don't think there is any need to worry about him being unhappy in that way.

Felton has hardly shown anything that would make ANYONE think that he's being denied playing time or any other opportunity. I don't keep up with recruiting very much, but I don't see what all the hype was about where he's concerned.

The lack of effort last night and a few games this year reeks of Team chemistry issues not pointing any fingers but it seems like that.

What do you think?

they'll be a top four seed..that's really what matters.

they'll probably beat duke at home and they have clemson, nd, and miami.

cmon, people.
I’m not mad, just trying to be realistic. We might go 6-4 over the last 10 but there’s some tough games left. We are a good team, but we’re not great. And that’s ok. We got the belt last year, and are loading back up for next year.

If we go 8-2 or 9-1 over that stretch then Roy will have coached his buns off.

this happens every year, it seems...problem is they don’t have the talent to overcome this week to week.

It’s not chemistry. It will rarely ever be chemistry problems under Roy’s watch. He creates the right culture within the team to prevent that. You’ll also have less chemistry issues and upheaval with a team led by upperclassmen. That’s why I love the traditional way of building a team rather than relying on OAD talent. And people ask, “why not both?” And the answer is that you can’t have your cake and eat it too. OADs are too talented to play the background while less talented upperclassmen take the reigns.

With that said, if there is any hint of chemistry issues within the team, the only place it could be coming from would be Felton. He looked pissed coming out of the game last night and I’m sure he’s pissed that his freshman season hasn’t gone as any of us expected (to date). But Roy will get that in check if it exist. Or if Roy can’t get it in check, Seventh will phase Felton out when he’s healthy.

I think our issues on any given night stem from complacency. Sure, Berry is a warrior and a winner and you expect him to bring it every night and set the tone. But he’s human. On some level, I think Joel and Theo think they can turn it on when they need to. Honestly, I think Roy thinks that at times too. Because there’s no explanation for him not stopping runs with a TO when he has a bizarre lineup in. He thinks that no matter the hole, his main guys can dig them out. Most years we have the talent and experience that proves he’s right. This year we don’t.

Here’s to hoping the team develops the “killer” mentality in the postseason and sustains it all the way through. We’re not winning the regular season (we never were this season). But maybe we can get hot shooting the ball in March. And here’s to hoping we pick up the intensity and sustain it for a run in the tournament.
