Just when I thought you couldn’t possibly get any weirder.
No kidding. It's such a trip that I feel like I should make a Gayson Allen joke.
Lol. It's actually fascinating. I pop over there every 2 months or so and have been since they joined the ACC. I mostly look at their football board but their basketball board some too.
It's fascinating because they have been completely stripped of their identity as an athletics program. Once upon a time they were the kings of college football. They have like 9 national championships. And not all of it is ancient history, either. Even in the early 80s, they were still dominating. They also played in an on-campus stadium. Then, everything fell to shit in the late 80s. No doubt, they were hurt by the city of Pittsburgh's evisceration when the steel industry fell apart and everyone evacuated Western Pennsylvania. A lot of the talent in what they call WIAPL (10 counties in Western Pennsylvania) they always relied on, dried up. And they fell from grace quite quickly in football. To compound matters, they found themselves in an awful Big East in football.
Meanwhile, in the 90s, they got really good at basketball and the school sorta flipped to a basketball school. They kinda pulled a "Syracuse" where now younger fans only know Pitt as a basketball school, but older fans remember the glory days when it was a football powerhouse and basketball was an afterthought.
To make things even worse still, in the late 90s, I wanna say 99, Pitt's athletic department inexplicably tore down their historic on-campus football stadium and built..... wait for it... their new basketball stadium on that site. Ever since, of course they've shared Heinz Field with the Steelers, a franchise that absolutely dwarfs Pitt football in popularity, brand, etc etc.
Heinz is of course not on Pitt's campus. This is a major bone of contention for Pitt fans. At literally any time of the year, you can peruse their free football board and a "we need an on-campus stadium" thread will be on the first page, and probably near the top. It's all they talk about and who can blame them. They've gone from a football powerhouse with Heisman Trophy winners and a slew of national titles to... an extremely mediocre football program that doesn't even play in their historic stadium or even have their own stadium.
Oh, and the best part of perusing their boards. They whine on a Moo level. They've never lost a game legitimately. It's always the refs screwing them. And, at all times, they have at least 3 Penn State threads running. They're obsessed with PSU just like Moo is obsessed with us. They're a hoot.

Who knew? They claim 8 natty’s between 1915-1937, and 1976 being their ninth.
It's not really a good school. Both Pitt and Rutgers are ranked significantly higher, so I have no idea why someone would pay triple the price to go to St. John's. It's one of those schools that wealthy parents push their kids to because it feels like they are going somewhere good (private, Catholic school in decent location). Seton Hall is pretty much the same way.
I agree with this, but would an on-campus stadium really make a big difference? I don't see them suddenly pulling the PA kids away from Penn State. If I were a recruit I'd think playing at Heinz is pretty cool anyways, though admittedly they don't have the fan base to fill it up.

I'll feel like the season is back on track if we can win Thursday. That puts us back on pace for what I'd call a pretty successful year given the circumstances. A loss and things still feel off. I wonder if we'll be favored given it's at home?
I really want us to get a bye in the ACC tournament and a protected NCAA seed. The bye gives us a good shot at making noise, and I think UVA is the only ACC team that is substantially better than we are (though Duke doesn't seem like a good matchup for our strengths). In the tourney if we got a top four protected seed we'd have a very good shot at getting to the Sweet 16 at a minimum.

I'm not sure a win over pitt means we are back on track. They are the worst team in the conference by far. A win against duke would be huge, but given they are coming off a loss I think it's extremely unlikely.

Was talking about a win over Duke. I disagree that it's unlikely, I think it should be a toss up.
I think you just take his assists and divide it by his turnovers.

The game Thursday is probably one of the least-looked-forward-to in recent memory. UNC will have to bring their absolute best game all season to keep up with the blew devils. The way teams shoot the 3 against us is such an issue that I shudder to think how badly they will execute that factor alone. We won't have any answer for Bagley. That dude could have a career high. I'm being very frank, I fear this will be one of the worst games against dook in a very long time. I am hoping they aren't too worn-out to give State a game less than 48 hours later. I hate to sound so pessimistic, but... that's what I feel like will happen.

Kenpom has Duke about 5 points better than us this year, but that's over 100 possessions. In a 70 possession game they are 3.5 points better then, and home court advantage is worth about 3.5 points, making the game a pick 'em.
I agree that we don't matchup well with them, but I think it's easy to overestimate the importance of that. It's worth 2-4 points I think, not 10. I think we have a decent shot to win.

LOL . . I hear ya. There are some things you won't get from just a box score, but, if, you have watched the game, everything I need to know I can find in the box score.
While watching the game, I often will glance at the 'box' just to keep up with fouls and %s . .
I would expect dook to be favored by 3. We can certainly win this game but its all about us hitting the 3’s and keeping them from hitting too many. I understand they have a pretty good big guy but I’ve not seen him play but I assume he’s a stretch 4?

They have two legit bigs. Bagley can play inside and out. He is a big guy who can do a little bit of everything. He is really legit. Carter is more just inside but is also really good. Those guys are going to get their points regardless. We just have to shut the other guys down to an extent. Then we can have a shot.
Thanks. Since they’re mostly OAD’s in derm these days, I usually only have to see them once or twice before they’re gone. Except for that damn punk Allen. Thank god he’s a senior.
WT actual F?!! I have to admit I had not noticed that on the schedule. Who in the sam hell at the league office looked at a schedule that made us play AT state 40 hours after finishing up against duke and said, "Oh, that seems fair"?
It was part of our silent agreement with the NCAA to drop the AFAM stuff
3 games is 5 days is definitely brutal. Not sure if anyone else has that on their schedule this year. At least it isn't far to travel for the Saturday game.
ESPN gives duke a 52% chance to win in their matchup predictor. So I'd say duke favored by 2-3 sounds right.
Good thing this year's duke team is not what they usually are. duke isn't a big 3 point threat this year. Or rather, they really only have 2 guys on the floor at one time that shoot it versus the normal 4 guys.
If they're a bad matchup for us because of their size and propensity to play dominant on the inside, then we're a bad matchup for them because of our guards and propensity to play on the outside.
I think it will again be a close game. It usually is. It will come down to who gets the whistle, who has the effort and who makes less mental errors. The whistle is the whistle and we can't do anything about that. I like that their freshman and will probably reach a bunch if they don't zone us. So that may help. But like you, if I'm Roy, I let Bagley and Carter get theirs and try our hardest to not let Allen or Trent get on track shooting the ball. Seventh's defense will be a big boost in helping to stay in front of Duval. As for effort, both teams have mailed it in a bunch lately. The effort has been weak for both teams. I like our experienced leadership and mental fortitude but if the effort is bad early or the whistle goes against us early, that part may not matter. Also need to hit shots. We should see some open 3s. We don't need all four of our shooters to be "on", but they can't be "off".
I think our perimeter can be a bad matchup for them if they drive the ball. That is where their defense really suffers. It isn't really where our offense thrives though. Hopefully Berry and Pinson (the two who can drive) will exploit that . I mean, the key is hitting shots. We probably won't get a ton down low from driving or our bigs. Need to just make shots that are a little away from the basket.
Well, there were two instances last year where they dropped back to back games and in both situations, the two games they lost were away from Durham. Going back to 2012, there has only been one season where they didn't have back to back losses at some point. So we might as well be the ones to give them back to back losses this year.
Despite the fact they can't guard a tree, I think this year's team is better.
I really don't think this makes any difference. The best teams don't lose many back to back games because they simply don't lose any games period. I don't see how losing to St. John's helps them in this one though.
Don't get me wrong, it won't be easy to beat them, but young teams are prone to dropping games they shouldn't, especially away from home. I'm not saying we will win, but I think we can regardless of the fact they just lost. I would have thought the fact we lost the game before the State game would mean we were sure to win that one, and it didn't work out that way. I just hope we get good contributions from all our major guys, because if we do, we will be in a good position, regardless of outcome. We can't have a game where it's only 2 guys doing anything and the rest of the team plays like garbage, because we won't win doing that.

Our domination of State is something I really enjoy. Losing both regular season games has probably never happened since Roy took over.
