OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

Was he injured ealrlier this year? I don’t recall ever hearing of a basketball player taking a non-injury redshirt year unless it was to either put on or take off some weight.

Why would any top recruit even do that to start with?

So what are your thoughts on Baker burning his redshirt @tw3301?
Jack White has been broken since the Syracuse game, Duke clearly needs some outside shooting. If he and O'Connell can provide it I'm for it. In all reality he probably wasn't going to be here 5 years anyway, any kind of success these days and you end up on draft boards. Tre Jones couldn't beat Shaq at a game of horse but somehow he is likely going in the first round. I don't really understand why some people seem to care.

I watched him a ton in HS, never thought he was a early entry NBA player. If anything, he's a guy that can get better over 4 years and maybe play his way into a 2nd rounder (Cam Johnson type).

I think K royally f-ed him.

But haven't you guys needed outside shooting before the Syracuse game?

So why wait until now to play him?

I don't really care, it's just a weird situation to me. I thought the whole point of him reclassifying was so he could use the redshirt year.

He reclassified to use the redshirt year to develop. I think it was actually a smart plan on his part. He can develop more in college than he would have in high school.

Jack White was shooting around 40% from three before the Syracuse game, he is now literally unplayable. Baker was going to redshirt when Duke didn't need him, clearly that changed. The same people who are all bent out of shape over this were bitching about Baker reclassifying just to redshirt.

Do you realize K is getting shit because it isn't supposed to be about if Duke needs him. At this point, it's about the kid when you sit him 3/4 of the season after you reclassed him up.

what’s naz tweeting about?
Some interview that was supposed to be off the record it seems, but ended up on the record, due to the interviewer wanting to stir up controversy.

Anyway, from what I read of Nas's quotes, Nas first was 100% respectful of Zion, and said Zion was / is great, and that they are still friends.

Nas just thought / said that after Zion went down, Zion's injury shouldn't have been the only story, or story #1, #2, #3, etc..... with the Heels still playing against a still very talented Duke team and beating them by 18 at home......why is that story of what the Heels did, barely a footnote on the evening? Why didn't their team performance get more media attention? He thought they as a team weren't given enough credit.

My editorial: I'm guessing Roy doesn't love Nas's comments, but at least Nas's comments weren't shots at Zion or Duke. I'd guess Roy just wants the Heels continued play to do the talking, and not worry at all about the media. They are going to love / cover Zion and Duke more than most other teams combined, and no whining about it or raising it is going to change that

I think there should be a rule that if a kid reclassifies, he has to redshirt. I don't like this new reclassifying trend. As if OAD wasn't "instant gratification" enough, now guys want to skip a senior year of high school and then be OAD.

As long as they do the work, I don't have a problem with it. There are kids who graduated early just so they can get a head start on college. They are allowed to participate in all student activities. Other than you wanting to control an 18 year old's life, why should an athlete have to live by different rules?

Most kids are old enough anyway.

Parents hold their kids back in 8th grade for the advantage then can always class them back up if they are good enough.

i’ve never heard of that ^^^ in particular, but if it is true, that’s pretty lame of any parent to do that.

K isn't really getting any shit, doubt he reads UNC/UK message boards.

It doesn't make any sense to redshirt if there was no chance of him staying 5 years. Literally none.

So either a) The plan was for him to stay 5 years and K just changed course on him at the very end of a season in which he could have gotten some solid reps, because K realized he didn't have any bench to speak of and put his desires above Baker's (which I'm fine with to an extent, but let's just call it what it is)

or b) He was never going to stay 5 years, but K didn't want to have to actually play Baker for his 10 mins or so a game to develop him, because he had better players that he wanted to give all the minutes too - and needed to maintain that highly recruited players play 35 minutes a night. Didn't want to have to play Baker or make excuses for why he wasn't playing him more - so he just redshirts the poor bastard to take care of that problem.

Neither makes K look like anything other than a self-centered prick, and there's really no amount of spin that could convince me otherwise.

B. Definitely B.

Unless Baker was lying when he commented, it isn't B. He said he was reclassifying so he could spend the year developing as a redshirt at duke instead of high school. That's not bad thinking since he had almost no competition in high school and didn't have the same resources that he does at duke.

ESPN app.

watching on theacc.com right now...espn app not showing available in my area because it’s on via local affiliate’s second channel, watch-d2...the local ace channel went from wake/miami to bowling.

anyway, this game is the perfect storm...ugh

What's the deal with after every game, gary7 posts the "very brief stuff?" Is he a self-proclaimed guru or something? He's like Adam Lucas sans the knowledge, writing talent... and paycheck.

You answered your own question with another question. He's probably some rec league coach that thinks he is gracing THI with the gift of his insight.
