OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

Are you trying to be a dildohead this morning?
Answer the question. You reverted to that crap because you don't like the answer.

No writers thought that Hubert was the best coach in the ACC. I don't either. It's obvious you don't or else you would have answered the question.

Sympathy votes are participation trophies. F that. If he's not the best coach then he shouldn't have any votes for COY.

I am not in the business to break down what every coach did before I vote. Looking at the records Forbes did not do a job that was head and shoulders above Hubert. Also Larranaga got 3 votes, Young and Bennett with a vote.. all of which finished behind Carolina.

Bennett getting a vote is also pretty bad, they really underachieved. I thought Larranaga and Young both did a very good job this year.

My issue with Hubert is that I think he was bad most of the year...but I think he's really improved in the last month. So most improved coach? Yeah, I'd go there.

Honestly, part of my disdain is Armando getting screwed. 6 votes for Paolo being the difference between Armando and Alondis is ridiculous.

COY is such a subjective vote. The only numbers to go by are your record and coaches who have talent are often overlooked because they were "supposed to" have good teams. Hubert winning it would have been a decent choice, but him not winning it isn't a big deal.

One has to wonder if anyone who sent in their votes before the duke game would have voted differently after that game.

We may be suffering a little recency bias here regarding Davis. Before sat I felt he had done an adequate job but not worthy of coy talk.
Agree with this completely. No one wants HD to succeed more than myself, but this is not even worthy of discussion. Has HD improved, learned, turned the team around, etc.? Absolutely and they had a great plan last Saturday, but COY is another thing altogether. Maybe I'm wrong about the voting process. Is it a ranking or simply a vote for COY? If it's just a simple vote of one for COY, it wasn't HD.

And, I should add, the real travesty that fully demonstrates what a waste of time all this is: it's not that HD didn't win or even get more votes, it's that K actually finished solidly in second place. What exactly did he do to deserve such placement other than the pandering towards his retirement?????

Bacon absolutely deserves ACC POY

that is the problem for me.

we can talk about davis getting the same number of votes as young and bennett
all we want, but kay getting more votes than brey and larranaga is ridiculous.

K hasn't done any kind of coaching in 7-8 years. He assembles talent and hopes that what he's assembled can put up a good record and then get lucky in the tournament. He's a shell of his former self, which was a really good basketball mind.

I wouldn't have voted for Hubert for COY because I suffered through this season. The UT and UK blowouts shouldn't be factored in but to anyone that watched, they are. But with that said, I would have no idea how any ACC coach could win the award this year. Everybody sucked. I mean, I guess WFU finished considerably above where they were projected and by that criteria, I don't have any issue with Forbes winning. And they made a huge leap from where they were last year.

But I have a major beef with Bacot not winning ACC POY. That seems unimaginable after his domination on Saturday night. I didn't think it should be particularly close before Saturday as I thought Bacot's numbers were ridiculous - Tim Duncan like. But for certain Saturday should have been the difference maker. I mean Bacot didn't get a double-double but he did go 10/11 from the field and had his way with the ACC DPOY. It's a travesty that Bacot didn't win. Highway robbery if you ask me. The rationale doesn't make sense. If Forbes is the COY, then evaluating Williams against a guy whose coach wasn't COY should also favor Bacot. Bacot's numbers were just better too. I think he averaged 14 rpg in conference play. That's absurd.

What I don't get about Bacot is that he got the most votes for All ACC yet was ten votes behind for POY? I could see the math working if he was maybe 2-3 votes behind for POY, but 10?

They play different positions. A voter could deem Armando to come in second as POY, but still think he was first team all ACC. (Not that I agree with the vote, just my thinking on how they got there).

What’s remarkable about bacot achievements is that he’s not nearly as athletic as most players. He can’t jump. He’s not fast or exceptionally quick. Does not have good shot form. His post moves are okay but nothing special. At times looks downright awkward out there. But he’s a fking baller.
And he's also able to overcome whatever that is on the top of his head.

I'm thinking K will come out of retirement next year at some point to avenge the loss Saturday and then have Saturday's loss expunged from his record.
Was listening to a podcast that predicted this would happen. Scheyer will "get sick" for some cakewalk home game next year (BC, GTech, etc.) and Coach K will come riding in on his white horse (or the Death Star), to take the reins back for one game, and get a W for his new last game ever in Hansbrough Indoor Stadium.

I could absolutely see that happening, with his ego being as fragile as it is.

He took a shot at Roy for being at games and still involved in the program. So he’d be a gigantic hypocrite if he did that….yeah that sounds right.

I wonder if Roy gets more worked up as a spectator than he did as a coach. I imagine it can be hard to watch and have no control over (unless he's giving signs to Hubert like a catcher to a pitcher.)

Roy could sit behind the opponent’s bench, listen in on the huddles, bang on a garbage can a la the Astros! Sounds like a great plan right? 😂

the shammond williams episode has me all “dusty in the room”…the tournament is outstanding.

but fukk dook, still

eta: i cannot believe they lost to arizona that year…so freakin talented and just really good dudes.

Actually of all the excuses I have read this is one I might agree with. Imagine seeing all that and knowing how big of a let down it would be to everyone if you lose the game.

I sort of do too. By the same token, K could have bypassed that circus or postponed it a week or so. I don’t pretend I would have followed that route but he had the clout to block a good chunk of it off.

For the dookies, the real sin is that by objective measure they had a better team and lost in one of the most important games in your program’s history to your biggest rival.

This is what makes me think K has lost a step. Hubert adjusted but continued to run the same strategy more or less throughout the second half. And then Mark Williams, their best defensive player by far, sits for the last 7 minutes of the game?

How does that make sense?
