However, there’s no doubt we’re going to miss Manek. You just can’t substitute his shooting.
I've been saying all off-season that this was going to be the reason we need to hit the breaks on title talk. We might be able to plug that hole eventually, but it will probably take a couple of months to do it.

Bacot’s hair was worse than Styles’ play
His hair was easily the worst thing that happened last night.

I think Manek was a HUGE part of the title run on that team.

I rewatched the Baylor game last summer. I had forgotten that it went to OT and I forgot that there were only about 10 minutes left in the game when he went out. That was just one game, but without him in THAT game, they squandered a 25 point lead that he helped to achieve.

I don't mean to minimize/diminish the entire 21/22 team's chemistry and the necessity of all of the parts by pointing-out Manek. Manek was one vital part. But, ALL of the parts are not there anymore. The '09 and '17 teams had a lot more parts, and a lot more of the parts returning. The '21/22 team had only 5 parts! It needed all 5.

I think they will find their way as a NEW team, eventually. But, I don't think they're going to be as good as last year's team was in March of '22.

Manek was a freak that could get off shots quickly over literally any defender in the country. But he wasn't just knocking down the shots, he was drawing a ton of attention from opposing defenses which opened up the floor for other guys to make plays. Nance is going to have to consistently being able to pop outside and knock down shots on the perimeter, or teams will just stuff the paint to neutralize Bacot and the dribble drive from Caleb and RJ.

One thing I've never understood. Davis drove the lane and scored. They kept saying, he can score like that at will. If that was even remotely possible, he would drive every other trip.

Fame was lackluster IMO. I think Davis was toying with lineups and personnel at times. I think he will be like Roy, and allow the team to struggle to teach them. As we know, we are a monster in the post season.

this team will be fine…i do feel like the roster is super talented top to bottom and if hubert figures out the rotation, it’s a title team.

trimble is going to be a problem.

After the 1st I honestly though that all the opposing teams scouts worked harder in the off season than the team as a whole. Then I wondered if Bacots golden brillo pad hair was wound to tight. They turned it on in the 2nd half. I'm glad HD slowed the rotating door rotations down and played more sets.
I was sick of seeing the COc player flexing after each play in the 1st half. And yes, Trimble is going to be a hand full.

Areas of concern
3 point production
Rebounds on both ends
To much dribbling
Slow starts and no boxing out
HDs sub patterns

All can be fixed, and when it does oh boy!!!

Big shout out to Leaky!!!

My concerns center around two things, our players reading too many complimentary things about them in the offseason and Love auditioning for the pros at the expense of the team’s goals. I understand we’re currently limited rotation wise due to injuries. That will hopefully work itself out. But we’ve seemed lackadaisical in both of our games. That is epitomized by our poor rebounding efforts. As Gary and 75 said, we have way too much dribbling going on and not enough ball/player movement. I hope we’ll be an unselfish team but 4 assists in a 40 minute game?! Even in the second game, we assisted on less than half our made baskets. That’s not unselfish ball. And that walk away move by Love would get him benched to start the next game if I were coaching them. Whether RJ should have given up the ball or not, that shit can’t be tolerated. It appeared Hubert was not happy about it.

As for positives, we have a good combination of experience and depth if Puff and Washington can get healthy. If we get them in the rotation, it will help tremendously. Nance isn’t Manek and shouldn’t be used the same way. He can be effective in his own way, closer to the basket. I am concerned about our three point shooting, Manek and Bacot should not be launching many threes or we’re in trouble. So someone is going to have to provide that third three point shooter along with Love and RJ. I was hoping that would be Puff with a little help from Nickel. We shall see.

Every team is different, even one returning four starters. It going to take time to develop rotations and see what kind of chemistry this team has. People who thought we’d blow through the ACC with very few losses and march right to the FF are a little overly optimistic, IMO. I’ve seen enough to know we’re going to lose some head scratchers, like always.

I didn't see the game but after the first game, I was going to also opine that Nance was going to be more of an inside guy, and that there he might be nothing less than stellar. On the other hand, he might just be building confidence in his threes. Like you or somebody said though, Manek was one of a kind with the threes.

I feel like the basketball team's defense is definitely better than football, but there's no way they should be ranked #13 in the CFP. Beau is no Drake.
some guys are going to have to play both ways where they are only used to playing one. Could be a long game ahead for us.

I think UNC will be bumped out of the top seat without a loss if they don't show up for a game soon

Looks like Brady Manek was the x factor.
Honestly. Based on last year's overall performance, up to dook, it was rough. Year 2 with a deeper team, minus Manek should be better against what we have faced so far. We are heavy junior and senior this year. Last year ki da reminded me of late nineties dook teams firing a million 3s each game. Even manek took a while to get going last year. We will most likely drop in rankings if performance doesn't pick up.

The team looks like they are going through the motions on their redemption tour because they are predestined for a return to the FF where they will turn it on and win. But this team isn't good enough for that and only they think so.

Bacot, more than anyone is kind of pissing me off. He's the guy that should be leading by example and he looks disinterested. Slow and clunky. No umph to his game. Davis is thinking too much and not playing off instinct. Pete doesn't fit right yet and he's clogging the lane. Feels like Roy is behind this team.

No doubt that the loss of Manek is hurting but I do think the 3s will start falling. The rebounding on the other hand is a serious issue. We're getting beaten to balls and just seem to be out of position. Puff's return should help in that he's at least a gritty player that might spark some passion from a lifeless group. But he'll need to shoot the 3 a lot better than I've seen from him so far to make a real impact. Interested in seeing if Washington can help in this department.

JMU is who we play this weekend and they've been firing on all cylinders. We're primed for an upset, which frankly, may not be the worst thing.

Some of this is on Hubert. He seems to be experimenting

Yeah but it’s early. I assume lots of HD tinkering and figuring out who to use - where at this point.

We HAVE to get something out of our bench eventually-soon

Think back on the Roy years and early in the season it was borderline like he was trying to lose- showing he didn’t care about Ws and Ls early in the season - he cared more about the process and figuring out roles and who could deliver what. Some real WTF player rotations and sub patterns - even right in the middle of getting our doors blown off in early season games.

I don’t see as much of that from HD. While not same as live game action that sort of stuff I’d rather he tinker and figure things out in practice/ scrimmages instead of during a tough early road game against a legit opponent

Yes, it's very early. It's a new team overall. But, nothing I've seen so far is very encouraging. If any of the 3 cupcakes had been top 20 level, I don't think they'd be undefeated. The veterans look disinterested. Bacot is really disappointing.

That Sports Illustrated cover facsimile is going to sting if things don't improve immensely. Things can always get better.

I watched the Kansas/dook game and... I don't think the dookies are going to miss a beat. They lost, but it was a slugfest. Those freshmen and Roach were fighting.

Kansas looks better than last year to me. They move great without the ball, something we don't do at all.

Lots of people said all that same kind of stuff last year and then the ACC overachieved in the tourney and had half the Final Four.

Key word, overachieved. This isn't really something new though. It's been a three team conference for a while (UNC, dook, UVA).

Certainly those three have been the teams that have had national relevance as far as being top dogs, but Hamilton has done a good job of getting Fla St in the conversation as being consistently good and Syr still makes noise at points. It's everyone else who are literally dragging ass.

I mean you could also say "outperformed every other conference when it counted the most." Point is all the noise about the ACC being down was proven wrong in March.
I don't think you can say it was proven wrong. You have to count the whole year. Pretty much every metric ranks us as the third best conference for the last few years.

I don't have to count the whole year. I'm talking about the tournament. In March when it counted the most the ACC proved the naysayers wrong. Three out of five conference teams in the field made the Elite Eight, two the Final Four, and the Heels were a few minutes and one janky ankle away from a 'ship as an 8-seed.

You have to count the whole year if you're questioning the original statement.

Nance is proving to be a nice Manek replacement this gm offensively.
Across the team a little more defensive hustle and fundamentals could go a long way.

Mando is very troubling to me. Leaky has really shown to embrace off season training. Love is still Love. We are winning games that would have been L's last year. Survive this weekend with no losses and I'll be impressed
