What a weird situation that was. Of the 3 years he played varsity, they only had a winning record 2 of those years and didn't make the tournament any of the 3 years. It's mindboggling that the rest of the team would have been that bad. So I think that has to be part of the legacy. He also never shot anywhere close to 50% for a season (.438 for career). He apparently had some Caleb Love in him. So it does make you think, was his dad's game plan just give Pete the ball so he can go set a bunch of records, team success be damned?
But the numbers are absurd. Dale Brown supposedly charted every shot Maravich ever made and claimed that had the 3 point line been in existence, his career average would have been 57 per game.
