OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

and there were games that Roy and even Hubert won that Dean might very well have lost. Dean was a genius at running a program but he lacked the cutthroat win-at-all- costs character of a coach K...which is a good thing. We won with Roy because his character and motivation was something in between those two. I loved Dean but he could bring about some frustration for those who think we should win everything all the time (which of course we should), mostly because he lost games that probably shouldn't have been lost..

In other words, don't discount Roy compared to Dean and keep our fingers crossed that Hubert is capable of producing something better than what we are seeing.
Not discounting Roy and yes very happy to have had him

Yeah UNC will definitely get the benefit if it’s very close between us and someone smaller.
I keep seeing a lot of the opposite. I see a lot of "UNC doesn't deserve it"...and, as hard as it is to admit it...they don't. This team has been so underwhelming that it's kind of embarrassing.

If they win tonight and manage to get to the semifinals of the tournament, I guess that's earning a spot. But, this team has been a huge letdown, imo.

That’s just fans and media talking heads saying that. I promise you the NCAA will do what they can to get UNC in.

One thing is crystal clear. Last years late season/tourney run is definitely the most improbable run of any unc team and might be the most improbable tourney run of any team in its history.

I'm so over it at this point, noting more frustrating than a team that doesn't improve over the course of a year.

I took about 10 games off this year in the middle of the season. Said I was done. But my kids pulled me back in over the last few games and we were looking ever so slightly better. So I was excited to watch the duke game thinking we were just kidding for most of the season and we were going to turn it on and beat the shit out of them before we start our annual run under Hubert. Lol.

I have never wanted a season to be over so badly. I don't have much hope for next year either but at least that's several months off and I can hopefully find another winter hobby to occupy my time between now and then.

Little off topic but interesting

Pete maravich’s ncaa scoring record is 3667 pts scored in 83 games
If you took the 83 highest scoring performances over the last 3 seasons you get 3464 pts.

What a weird situation that was. Of the 3 years he played varsity, they only had a winning record 2 of those years and didn't make the tournament any of the 3 years. It's mindboggling that the rest of the team would have been that bad. So I think that has to be part of the legacy. He also never shot anywhere close to 50% for a season (.438 for career). He apparently had some Caleb Love in him. So it does make you think, was his dad's game plan just give Pete the ball so he can go set a bunch of records, team success be damned?

But the numbers are absurd. Dale Brown supposedly charted every shot Maravich ever made and claimed that had the 3 point line been in existence, his career average would have been 57 per game.

Yes. I think his Dad even admitted as such. How did they even get 1 kid to play for them after they watched Pete’s sophomore season?

That’s not possible. He averaged 44 on 16.5 FG per game. In order for 57 a game that means 12-13 of his 16.5 FGs would have had to have been from 3. I’ve seen video, he scored a ton in the lane with little pull up jumpers. I’d guess around 5-6 of his FGs were 3s, so about 50ppg. Which is still insanity, I agree.

he took (on average) 38 shots per game ... THIRTY EIGHT.
