Losing Tyler Nickel was a big blow, IMO. Davis recruited him and he bailed after one season. HD better learn fast. That kid is going to burn-it-up somewhere else. He wasted that recruit this season.

HD is a unique breed of competitive spirit. He had to give it ALL in order to succeed. He doesn't understand when kids don't have the same intensity and passion that he has/had and gave (gives). I don't know that people who are naturally wired like that are the best coaches. Maybe some of them are. A great coach, I think, is the one that can bring out the "Hubert Davis effort" in a lot of kids that don't even realize they have that in them.

What I'm saying is he wouldn't have had that turnover. He was already good at getting people to stay. Mostly because he could figure out a way to get them enough time and show them that he can develop them. Add that to the NIL from being a UNC player and he's easily keeping us as a top 5 team with very little turnover.

Roy had a way of pissing in their cornflakes at times. Mccants probably would have bolted, as would several other if no penalty was incurred. Maybe if NIL happened sooner, when some of these legacy coaches still coached it wouldn't be so herky jerky as soon as the last whistle is blown each season

These guys are transferring for two reasons, playing time and development. Roy had a long track record of doing both. Hubert has a short track record of doing neither. Example would be Danny Green. He would have never gotten off the bench for Hubert. Roy made sure to get him time and development.

I'm not sure if year four is going to be anything special, either.

Not calling out Strum specifically, but not sure why you guys are all hung up on year four? I think if Hubert misses the tournament again he's done. Cadeau's probably going to join this year's team, and Jackson likely as not decommits if we look crappy again next year (he may either way). Not likely any savior class coming in '24.

On a more optimistic note, I don't see why we can't be a top 15-20 team again. Just have to add a couple good portal wings. Swap Nance for Terrence Shannon this year and we're probably around that range. We're not that far off, and I wouldn't give Hubert any slack. Missing the tournament again (or even being some 9-10 seed) is inexcusable given what we can offer. I'm rooting for him but we can't be that bad again.

I seriously doubt they will fire Hubs if UNC misses the NCAAT next season. I mean, unless it's some abysmal showing like 8-20, or something ugly like that, maybe .500 for the season and obviously missing the NCAA. But, let's say next season is identical (in record and overall performance), I don't think they will fire him. They just extended his contract and he went to the NCAA Championship a year ago.

But, you may also be right about the potential for a much better season. I don't have a clue because I don't play, coach, or really know a helluva lot about basketball.

- He went to the championship game (doesn't matter that it was hot at the right time situation)
- He's doing pretty good in recruiting
- He's Roy's pick
- He'll have "his guys"

And if we're being honest, a small but honest reason is that he's black.

Some of the stats in that article were pretty interesting. Basically said Love was a horrible shooter, Nance should have been used differently and Hubert should have used his bench more. All things we knew, but seeing it with stats was pretty crazy. Just flat out horrible.

Not sure the point of that article. I never get that kind of thing. I want to tell journalists that telling me what already happened isn't ground breaking. You want to impress me? Tell me what's going to happen next.

People like to hear an inside story, especially when it comes from a school that is traditionally good at hiding that stuff.

Yeah, ok. Maybe. Personally, I have no desire to read that or anything like it. Last season is over. Rehashing it does nothing for me as a fan except irritate me. And it humors me that writer thinks he broke some big story to the point he teased it on twitter yesterday. I see it more as a guy with little to write except a hit piece on a coach who currently has iffy support from his fan base. In other words, it was low hanging fruit and this guy, in absence of anything creative, took it.

I get your point, but it's Carolina and an article like that drives clicks. That's all that matters. Not everyone is AJ or THI.

People like watching high profile people/teams/companies/etc burn, especially ones they already dislike. Success breeds contempt. It's not that hard to understand; I'm sure it got lots of clicks.

Fair enough. I suppose he may get one more year after 23/24 as long as it's not super bleak. But if (and it's a big if, I really hope he succeeds) we have one season of missing the tourney and one as a middling 8 seed the next two years I hope we move on, no matter which order those occur in. At least one of the next two years should be a top 4/5 seed at a minimum.

I feel bad for Hubert for one reason. He was a great player for us and well liked and received within the Carolina circles by both former players and fans. It will not end well for him and he'll kind of be an outcast like Doh has been since it didn't work out for him. That's a shame.

Doherty is an outcast for far different reasons. i still say Hubert is our bball John Bunting.

I don't think he's an outcast anymore. If I remember correctly, the last time he was at the Dean Dome he was cheered. I also think he's participated in some documentaries about UNC as well. Time can heal wounds.

yeah i should have said "was an outcast." Dean's passing helped him a lot. he made an absolute mess of the basketball admin / office within 3 months of being given the job ... Dean had a huge problem with that.

Anyone excited about depending on a guy to reclassify and be one of the best freshman in the nation for us to have a good year? Of course, that's assuming Hubert has been able to get 2-3 good transfers that fit his system.
