OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

What’s everyone’s reasonable expectation level? I’m thinking no worse than ncaa tourney 6 seed and top 3-4 in acc. That’s a low bar for this program and it’s totally fukked up its where we’re at.
I think that after the deviant, almost complete fail of this past season, it's reasonable to have NO particular expectations for the upcoming season. We have talent going in, but we had talent last season. The coaching was questionable last season, but that coaching took virtually the same team to the championship game the season before. Who the hell knows what we should expect? If there's some Nostradamus among us who thinks he can tell us what to reasonably expect from all that, we need to give him a key position in government.

Bartorvik has us projected at 12th next year. I think that seems overoptimistic, but I'm letting myself getting talked into getting bullish on the team again. If anyone listens to the 3 Man Weave podcast, that was a bit sobering as they absolutely roasted the team + Hubert this week.

I still think we add Cadeau and another wing to start at SF. If we do I think the roster is clearly better and deeper than last year. My hope would be we'd be competition for a top 10 team, which means a #2 - #4 seed and probably top 2 in the ACC. Just looking at the rosters so far, no one except Duke and Miami should even have a chance to be better than us on paper. On paper.

Hubert and the staff would need to have improved from last year as coaches for this. I hope we see a bunch of changes there.

There is still the HD enigma to overcome.

Yeah, I think the talent is an upgrade but not to the point that it can overcome coaching. If Hubert improves we should easily be a top 25 team. If he hasn't changed, then we might miss the tournament again.
if last season rests directly on his shoulders, he doesn't just have to improve, he has to exhibit a complete reversal. A complete reversal just doesn't seem likely to me. Not saying it won't happen, but my optimism is highly dampered.

I kept hearing all the other teams scouted us, and that's why his system didn't work last year. Teams had 6 games in the tourney to scout and he almost won. I know Brady was important, but he was only 1 player. A developed bench would have soothed the loss of him. He didn't play a bench in season 1 or 2. But having what seemed like a loaded, upperclassmen lead roster seemed like a winning combination. The disaster of last year may ripple for a while. I know honestly, if another season like that happens, he needs to go. UNC can't rely on fools gold seasons to keep fans engaged. If he goes, I would love to see them go outside for once.

" UNC can't rely on fools gold seasons to keep fans engaged. "

the only part I disagree with. Fans will be engaged, and the fans will be in the drivers seat escorting him out if it comes to that. I hope it doesn't but I have no stomach for anything like a repeat of last year.

Apparently Dunn is transferring.
Was it the same Elliot Cadeau highlights I saw? Or was it the recent clip of the Stanford/ND xfer hitting a bunch of threes?

Serious note, it is possible Drake Powell and Ian Jackson highlights pushed him. Wojcik, Corman, RJ are all gone after this yr. So Dunn's senior yr he'd be competing with Jackson, Drake Powell and Wilcher for 2 and small-ball-3 mins and those former are looking really good.

I don't blame him for wanting a better angle on serious minutes.

I don't really care at this point. This is Hubert's team now. There are no more excuses for him. We'll see what type of coach he really is. Year three was always going to be the year to know what he is as a coach.

Seth Trimble is the only returning player on the roster to have hit a three pointer other than RJ. Seth hit 1 (6 attempts).

He is also third most experienced to return, played in all 33 games, avg 9 min per game.

Jalen W saw 20 games, 5 mins.

Is anyone else LOLing that Lebron is 0-4 in the conference finals? I really wonder how much more he has in the tank.

He claims he's thinking about retirement. He has one year left on his contract, though. I just took a look at his stats this year and they are still good. Was kinda surprised since it doesn't seem like people talk about him anymore unless he sets a record. Of course people usually forget to mention it takes him longer than the previous record holder.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

That dude is so pissed because he realizes he'll never be the GOAT. I hope it eats at him for the rest of his life. That guy sucks.

It will, till MJ gets cancelled for something.
Stats don't win games or chips. MJ's very presence defined how teams prepared. Lebron could have marketed himself better, and simply let his game speak for itself. Kobe saw this, and tried to clone MJ within himself. Lebron announced his GOATship way to early. He is a stud, but not the man.

More (dis)likeable: Kobe or LeBron?

Kobe was far more likable. I don't think I know anyone who has ever said they hate Kobe. Maybe while the rape trial was going on, but that's it.
I think I started disliking Kobe when people tried to compare him to Jordan while Kobe had that smug, cocky 'mamba' thing going on.

He scored a ton of points but took a lot of shots. Didn't seem like a great teammate... More of a punk, a little dirty. Seemed like a dookie in ways.

I'll amend my post to say I don't think I know more than one person who hates Kobe.

The dude had an edge, drive, and competitive spirit. He mimicked MJ as much as he could. He won 5 chips. He stayed with the Lakers for his entire career. Simply put, he wanted to be like Mike.
This latest series, and many more times shows how big of a baby Lebron is. Chased gold with 3 teams while attempting to stack the deck. Had he stayed at Cleveland and made a dynasty, his story probably would have beed different. To me, he was so close, but so far away.

As a unc fan with dean I disagree but tbh trying to be objective I have to admit it’s pretty accurate. We can point to dean’s intangibles to try and push him past K but at the end of the day you’re judged on results. As for Roy I’m pleasantly surprised.
Yeah, I think it's a decent list because I'm assuming it's just based on numbers. AI doesn't really have the capability to add in all the other things.

why are you surprised about Roy when his results were better than Dean's?

I won't deny my prejudices, but from a more close-up view than your average American BB fan has, there is no way the rat belongs above Dean. Results? Ratface got his results by playing games other than the game of basketball. Dean had a trick or two up his sleeve too but he didn't have his players practice flopping, etc. Kryzewski was about win whatever it takes. Dean was about do it right and the wins will follow. Dean must have been right because head-to-head, he owned Krzyskewskiz.

Maybe that is why I didn't like him, he tried to mimic MJ, but then was a bit of an ass and not a great teammate.

He was a great player overall, but # of chips isn't all that meaningful IMO. Ask Robert Horry on one side, mailman on the other.

Agreed, I'm not a huge Lebron fan either.

All that stuff isn't factored in by ChatGPT. It has no idea how to measure flopping. It's just based on numbers.

kobe was a killer and i respect that…he’s right behind mj for me.

lebron is at the table…and i totally respect kareem and wilt’s contributions so they also get seats at the table…lebron might be the best all-around basketball player i’ll see again…he’s 38 and had 40/10/9 in an elimination game…idgaf what he does off the court, entertain me.

duh, ya think? @heelmanwilm said that objectively, the list had it right and I responded with a more closely connected, subjective POV (which I indicated as such). I wasn't saying the list was wrong within its limited parameters of measurables, I was saying that the reality is that Dean was a better coach.

As a matter of fact, if you want to go by numbers, even Roy belongs above K. because he has more championships in the head-to-head matchup while Roy was coaching us. He's also the only coach ever to bag 400+ wins at two different schools, and his record against K was almost even in spite of K being well established when Roy started coaching UNC.

All things considered, to me...to ME...any ranking of K will always have an asterisk beside it.
