OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

it's clear they have issues, imo...he thinks you can run a college team with his attitude/philosophy, like a pro team...cal does it because the goal is explained when he's in the home, there's never an issue other than them buying in defensively...k just thinks his style will work with lottery kids, year in and year out for the last decade...at some point when you get one of those kids like allen and nobody else is a leader, it manifests throughout...it's just how i see it.

I thought someone on another forum put it well. They said something like Cal realizes these kids are using him. So he embraces it. He is using them in a sense as well of course but they recognize he is all about them and the league in the end. It is easy for them to buy in if that is the case. I'm not sure a guy like Tatum realizes this about K. Cal can make it work well. I'm not sure anyone else can.

Cal can make it work well.

Actually, Rat has 2 national titles in the same span that Cal has 1 ... with this OAD system. Not sure I'd say Cal does it "well." I think he's underachieved big time, given the talent he's had in his 8 years at UK.

Titles are tough to win. They have been as good or better than anyone during his tenure. K only won one with the OAD kids and hasn't had as much overall success with that model as Cal. No one has. I think he has been really good there doing it that way.

Good to see Matt at the game.
I for one have always been disgusted how UNC Bball fans turned on Matt. UNC Bball fans want to be holier-than-thou and act like Carolina Basketball is a close-knit family and all this ****in bullshit, and then they turn on one of their own -- a NATIONAL CHAMPION, mind you -- the second things go South.

I've met Matt before on a flight to Ft. Lauderdale and he's a good dude.

Also.....is this where I talk about how "Buckets" (AKA Mississippi) sucks and shouldn't shoot so much, or nah?

LOL ****in Radar.

Are they criticizing him shooting again? I post in gamethreads just to vent (and didn't notice it there) but this idea that Justin needs to shoot less is crazy to me. We need him to be as aggressive as possible.

G7 back-handed complimented his game tonight. Said he played well but still forced too many shots.

I'm with you, bud. JJ is our most potent offensive weapon. He needs to shoot whenever he feels called.

ETA: Cory bringing the flame emojis to the S&S thread!!!

Yeah, that dude said it last game to excuse Berry not having any assists. It made no sense because Berry is awesome and even played fine in that game. I rewatched the Saturday game and specifically looked for it. He was just wrong.

Doherty was a egocentric dick who almost ran off the entire 2005 national championship team. He also laid off the woman who was the liaison between Dean and former players.

Maybe he has learned from his mistakes and is ok now, but he was a jackass when he was here.

The only thing worse than the small group of terrible fans that is found in every fanbase is the guy who continuously calls that small group out and acts like that small segment is the vast majority.

that's it right there...that is exactly why he gets the best players.

the formula works if you can handle the smell of it.

Not a clue what you're talking about. EVERY one turned on Doherty.

Correct and we were all right to do so.

My point was that there is indeed a small segment of Carolina fans that suck- every fanbase has such a segment. However you rant and rave about this segment as if they represent the vast majority.

I understand your compulsion to bitch and moan but I'm not going to let you do so unabated, at least about our fanbase and school when it seems to me to be unwarranted.

It just doesn't sit well with me how everyone turned on a Tar Heel hoops legend.... especially since the fanbase and the program constantly extols this "We Are A Family" concept/vibe.

So Matt tried to separate himself from Dean and carve out his own identity. Big deal. Lots of coaches try to do that after succeeding a famous coach. Things didn't pan out and it was time for a change, but the way MD was treated poked major holes in the "We Are A Family" culture Carolina Basketball and its fans try to tout. It just didn't sit well with me. I guess Carolina Basketball is a family only when it's winning?

But it all goes back to Dickie B for me. Doherty was not ready to be put in a position to be head coach at North Carolina. Baddour made two godawful hires that nearly crippled one sport and did cripple another.

ETA: For all his struggles, Doherty DID recruit the "Big 3" that led us to Roy's first championship. I do think Doherty should at least get some credit for that from the fanbase and not seen as such a pariah.

Same. I ran into Matt when I was walking around the Smith Center one afternoon on a game night back when he was the coach. He was as nice and as cool as they come.

He was in over his head as head coach of UNC, but I'll always see him in a positive light. I mean, if I came out of nowhere and land a dream job that I wasnt yet prepared for, I'm sure it would get to my head too. Matt will always be cool by me.

Doherty was the only person on campus nuttier than McCants.

Believe it.

That statement is not rumor or speculation. I have witnessed some of Mad Matt's handiwork up close and personal. Dude's temper is worse than mine and that takes some doing. He rubbed everyone in the BB offices the wrong way. He pissed off Gut. He pissed off Phil. He pissed off Hanners, Fogler and even Roy. I can't speak for Dean but if he didn't get pissed he was the only around at the time who didn't.

What does sit well with you other than SEC tailgates?

HE FIRED THE WOMAN RESPONSIBLE FOR COORDINATING FORMER PLAYER CONTACT WITH DEAN SMITH.

That's not carving out your own identity, that is blowing up the building in the case of Carolina basketball family.

And as previously noted, little sits well with you.

Baddour sucked. No argument there.

And he did recruit them and then almost managed to force them all to transfer. What is so hard about that to understand?

Yes but THN thinks we were mean to him because our he thinks our fanbase sucks and he is constantly looking for ways to prove it.

For a while i was blessed/cursed to have my college roomie and good friend working for unc. He was involved in fund raising or some shyt like that. He was a big time sports junkie so he always had his ear to the door of the goings on in the atheletic dept and would email me tidbits and swear me to secrecy. (Lol). He was there during doherty years and butch davis. He once told me the players revolted on doherty in the locker room after a loss. The team split with some staying loyal to doh. It was ugly and tempers flared and things got physical. Of course the season tanked. Short time after that he emailed me that doh was given the choice to resign or be fired.

Cory earned a GMAB. Redeemable for 10% off any purchase at Yadkin Valley General Store. Would've been 15% if it'd been GMAFB.

Yeah, I feel slighted. Thought I earned the F. Seriously, I really tried to just make my point in a way where he would not have to engage me because of his inability to handle a difference of opinions. He had an out.

Perhaps I'm not getting my point across so I will try a different explanation:

I love the family aspect of Carolina Basketball. I think it's really cool that past players from multiple generations stay so close to and connected to the program. I think that's something to be admired. Now, I do not take this love of the family concept to an over-the-top level like the TPFKAPS of the world, but I digress.

The Carolina hoops family looks after one another. If one of the family members commits a sin or "disappoints" the family somehow (Phil Ford, Ty Lawson, etc etc etc), the whole program picks them back up and still supports them. It's a "hate the sin, love the sinner" type of thing. I really admire that.

However, I just can't really jive that with how everyone ostracized Doherty. Did he make mistakes? Yes. Was he ill-prepared to take on that role? Yes. Is he some evil devil that sought to ruin Carolina basketball? No. He bleeds Carolina Blue just like the rest of 'em. Why doesn't he get the same treatment as other transgressors? Doherty is like a dirty word to a lot of the hoops fanbase.

I, for one, hope that last night is the start of him being accepted again by the Tar Heel faithful. He has a pretty big place in Tar Heel lore, given he won a natty as a player and recruited players who also won a natty.

Well he doesn't get to be his own man. He had no credibility and trying to separate himself from the biggest thing that gave him credibility was downright stupid.

As far as how he was treated, he brought that upon himself. Just ask any player from his teams. They were all leaving if Doh hadn't.

ETA: For all his struggles, Doherty DID recruit the "Big 3" that led us to Roy's first championship. I do think Doherty should at least get some credit for that from the fanbase and not seen as such a pariah.

He does get credit for that. I'm not sure how much of that was Matt and how much was just the pull of our legend. But I'm willing to give Matt most of the credit there. But if I was good at 1 single thing at my job and sucked at everything else, they'd find someone else. That's how it works.

I have met Matt too. He was very nice and willing to take a pic with my kids. But that doesn't mean he should be running the program. I also met Joe Biden. He was very nice and willing to take a pic with my family. But I don't think anyone would support him running the country.

I never said he should be. He obviously shouldn't.

It was nice to see Dougherty at the game. Dark times for us UNC peeps when he was at the helm . . that 8-20 season was one of the most bitter pills I've ever had to swallow. Effort you can applaud . . . those guys just quit on each other.

I still like Matt a lot. I do feel he wasn't prepared for the enormity of running a program like UNC. And unfortunately, in trying to put his own stamp on the program, he made some rash decisions and alienated a ton of people. I hate that it didn't work out for him. But I know very few UNC fans who think of him as a "pariah". And I was very glad to see him at the game. I hope he still feels like he's a part of the Carolina Family, I think he does. Loved seeing Jamison there, he'll always be one of my favorites.

For the record, I hated the ugliness that surrounded the Doh situation at Carolina. It did indeed weaken our family atmosphere. I would have preferred a clean exit and for all that other stuff to have stayed in house. I'm never a fan of airing dirty laundry in public.
This is basically what I was getting at all along. Thank you.

Man that one poser (typo?) really is insufferable.
Which'un?

@coryfly is learning a valuable lesson over on THR, gary's opinion = 100% undeniable fact. I don't understand why he can't just discuss something rationally without talking down to someone and treating them like an idiot just for having a different opinion.

He is 95% of the reason this thread exists. We all got tired of his schtick. Some (and Cory is doing it in that VT thread) just like to go back over there and fuk with him.
