OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

no shortage of theories and advice out there for picking teams but I found these the most interesting trends (all since ‘85)

9 seeds are 6-70 vs 1’s with only two final fours and no titles.

There’s only been 10 upsets in rd of 16 with never more than one in a tourney

While all 4 1’s have made final four only once they still account for 24 of the 38 titles. 2 seeds 5, 3 seeds 4.

No seed lower than 8 has won it

No 5 seed has ever won

There’s an avg of 5 first rd upsets/yr

I don’t even think Mich state beats miss st. But I think to beat this msu team to go to s16 is something I’d sure sign up for. Most metrics show Mich st has no business being in the tourney, let alone an 8 seed.
yah, i’m pulling for mich st…i want no part of hubbard and those grown ass men on that team.

the ken pom stat he posted was pretty interesting…i’ll see if i can dig it up.

since 2002, every single national champ has been in the top 40 off/eff and top 25 def/eff…since 2002, only one time a team has been on the outside of the top 20 in either categories, that was 2014 uconn when napier carried them through.

BBN putting on a brave front to be excited about their new coach. By the time I came here to post it I had forgotten his name. He led byu to 19 wins I think. An alum at least. And a Mormon. So they gonna reel in some white guys.

Considering the message board chatter indicated a lot of confidence in bringing in Billy Donovan or Dan Hurley or someone of that stature, it will be interesting to see how quickly the wrath of BBN comes down on the new guy.

Their message board was a fun read over the last week. After the happiness from firing Cal it went to shock someone would turn them down, to disbelief that two people would turn them down, to acceptance they were slipping, to WTF with the hire, to he's an alumni so he's great (aka UNC mode).

Mark Pope is a decent coach apparently. But UK fans are not normal about their sports fandom. He’s already on the hot seat. But, I do appreciate their desire to get back to showcasing UK basketball rather than what Cal had going on there. And I say that irrespective of how one evaluates his success.

Lots of posters are refreshing home-pages the last few weeks looking for news regarding Lubin, Ugonna U, and Coleman Hawkins and anyone else. Imagine what is going thru the head of Withers, Washington and High!

a) One more frontcourt addition and those dude's opportunity is getting further decimated.
b) Perhaps they don't care about their own development and just want to be on a winning team ASAP, in which case they're saying the more the merrier.

I think fans probably fall into similar buckets of "win now, use that wallet" versus "enjoying long-term team and player development". Former are NY Yankees fans, NTTIAWWT

Lubin is essentially taking Bacot's minutes. It's not going to impact those guys.

team looks pretty good…they are really fast and ec is hitting outside shots…cannot wait to see capn jack get comfortable.

also, trimble is going to the rack and we need more of that, same with the rest of wings…gonna be fun.

hope washington can just be a solid 5 that hovers around a double/double…he looks good on defense tonight.

Felt really, really sloppy in terms of the banging and physical contact the zebras allowed. Too many turnovers and not enough team rebounding effort. But I thought they actually looked good for the first time against someone other than practice, particularly on an opposing team court and a team who shows some real potential. I don't think this will be the last time people think about Memphis this year. Also, not having RJ at all made for some interesting combos. This is gonna be a fun team to watch.

jackson is not comfortable lol…this isn’t an nba showcase.
Once he figures it out - and I'd bet it's sooner rather than later, he's going to average 15ppg in his sleep. He reminds me a lot of Joe Forte, can just score from any level and has so many ways to beat you. Until then, yeah, it's gonna be ugly at times.

He won't, but I hope we get him for 2 seasons. He can replace the scoring we lose from RJ.

I would dearly love to see us with a clone of Forte.

i tend to agree, it was just wild to watch…forte is a good comparison…while forte was smooth af, jackson looks more powerful and seems to play with an edge(much needed)…can’t wait to see this team in january.

i’ll get to see them live more this year than ever; charlotte, clemson, and blacksburg.

flagg is a problem, like barnes was a problem.
I've purposely watched him now and he's every bit as good as the hype. They'll be times he'll fade and make mistakes (such as the turnovers at the very end), but he deserves the attention. He's that good. What's crazy is he doesn't even turn 18 until just before Christmas.

The only other thing I'll say is to not sleep on Kon Knueppel, the "other" freshman. He's getting lost in the Flagg coverage, but the kid is flat out good. Has a crazy high motor, actually plays D, and can shoot for days. Games against them this year are gonna be no fun.

One note as an aside: games like last night always present a challenge for me until they invent a way for both teams to lose.

the cynical joke is to not pick one team or the other but to wish for the arena to collapse.

And I'm kicking myself for missing another opportunity to see dook lose, especially in a heartbreaker. Heartbreak for them and not me, of course. I want no misunderstanding in that regard.

Or maybe the really good ole days when you'd put somebody on him that could . . . . just cover him?
Lol no dude you had to wear him down. Put him on the floor a couple times. Dean wouldn’t go for such but my high school coach did. We played north buncombe and they had this player Jimmy Denton who was all everything but was soft. We put a big football player guy on him who loved to get dirty and coach told him every time he drove to hammer him. He fouled out but the damage was done. Jimmy shot jumpers rest of the game and we won. Uva back in the 70’s had a player they put in to do that. I think his name was Hatcher.
