Maybe it's not the talent he's talking about.
There has been a lot of chatter around here of a lack of effort and questionable attitude with Bol. He lived around Kansas City for a while and the word was his coaches and teammates didn't miss him when he left. Not sure if that will be a factor for Roy? Have you heard anything like that?Bol would be a take... if we have a shot.
So 5 top 60 wings isn't enough?
Oh and don't tell Isaiah and Kennedy that, for some reason they're convinced that they both came up HUGE in the Final Four.
Haven't heard of any mutual interest. There has been a lot of chatter around here of a lack of effort and questionable attitude with Bol. So let me ask you guys another question. I''ve heard from many people that Zion isn't coming to UNC, and I believe them. But if you're Zion, what leads you to that decision?
They are very much in it and there are some folks down in SC who would do whatever to keep him in-state.Don't be surprised if Clemson isn't heavy in the mix with Zion. He could go there for one year and be the whole show. No doubt Brownell is more than desperate with his job hanging by a thread. And as we have seen many times over the years, mainly football but also in basketball, Clemson will spend whatever it takes when they decide they need to win.
Does Knox have a decision date yet? Did a Google search and no solid info. Seems like next week maybe?
Ok, so lets get in Zion's shoes. How much money is another team (a booster right?) paying you to commit? Because I thought this usually occured with 4 star type players. Because if I'm a top 10 player like Zion, with many millions on the line based on developing my game the right way, I'm not picking my college based on $50,000. That's why someone like Knox turns down $1.4 million to play in China for a year. So I'm left with 3 options:The recruiting game is very "dirty" right now, and if Zion and his people are wallowing in dirt, RW wont win that battle. Not to mention alot of negative wind blowing against us.
But one thing you can be sure of, RW is still one of the best 2 or 3 recruiters in America.
I'm talking about guys with "clean" hands.
I'm not picking my college based on $50,000. That's why someone like Knox turns down $1.4 million to play in China for a year. So I'm left with 3 options:
2. We're dealing with a lot bigger sums of money here, and someone is paying Zion $500k-$1M+ to play at a different program. Seems sort of unlikely based on what I've read about bagmen.
There is a slight chance that recruits want to play for a school because they really like the coach and/or players.Ok, so lets get in Zion's shoes. That's why someone like Knox turns down $1.4 million to play in China for a year. So I'm left with 3 options:
1. Zion doesn't think like me, and would pick $100k over the best college coach. Seems pretty short-sighted, but possible.
2. We're dealing with a lot bigger sums of money here, and someone is paying Zion $500k-$1M+ to play at a different program. Seems sort of unlikely based on what I've read about bagmen.
3. There is something else I'm missing here, and it's not as simple as Zion being woo'ed by money.
I have no source other than Knox's dad, it's true. But according to this (source: https://mobile.nytimes.com/2008/10/05/sports/basketball/05jennings.html) Brandon Jenmings made $1.2 million in "salary and endorsements" playing abroad almost 10 years ago. Seems totally conceivable Knox could receive a similar amount. I don't know that $300k is all that much to them, although I could see it helping decide between similar programs.1. Don't buy into that $1.4 mil propaganda.
2. Anthony Davis got 300+, and that was 6 years ago. Cost of living has gone wayyyy up.
I'm not claiming that the players are getting paid. I asked why someone like Zion would rule us out so early, and the first response I got was "dirty money". I'm just following this line of reasoning down the rabbithole. There is a slight chance that recruits want to play for a school because they really like the coach and/or players.
I know you're not, but like you said it was the first response you got. There are people on here who will forget from time to time that a recruit can actually have a reason to say no to us that doesn't involve anything shady.I'm not claiming that the players are getting paid. What makes us think that other schools pay players under the table, with boosters, etc. but UNC/Williams do not?
Some claim Baker is a Dook fan, but he's shown UNC a heck of a lot of love though.Moore was listed as leaning to Dook before they cooled on him.
I think both of these guys could end up at Dook or UNC respectively. IMHO, I'd rather have Baker.
x1000. Baker is now 6'7" as a sophomore and in the tournament last week he was described as having a deft touch , athletic and being able to score with either hand. He said he is hearing the most from KU , FL , TX and UL(this is disturbing) . WF has offered and Keatts told him moo will offer soon. Roy has been watching him and I just hope he offers soon. This same article which is on Rivals so I won't bother to attach it , said Roy and Cal were lurking when Naz Reid was playing and there was no mention of UNC and Norris. Norris said to be focusing on Oregon and Arizona.^ I'm ready to see UNC offers Baker on the front page! He is one of my favorites for 2019 and being an in-state kid, we need to lock him up.
Zion's stepfather is the one trying to run his recruitment I believe. IIRC, he attended or played at Clemson. You also have lots of others as Gary mentioned pushing for SC as well.
Many of his friends/family want him "to pave his own path" instead of going to a blue blood school. Will be interesting to see if he leaves SC or not.
Ding Ding Ding. Concise and spot on.If you are directly involved in recruiting and AAU hoops it's no secret.
When a coach or his bag man point blank ask you, " How much will it cost to get ********'s signature?"
Where there's smoke there's fire, and RW's name is not floating around like that.
This is an interesting take on Brownell's situation, and some of our other sandlappers on the board have hinted at the same. Hafta admit, I've wondered myself. I started my HS coaching stint in SC back in the day, but I'm not at all close to Clemmy's internal workings these days. You make a correct assumption. And if you care to believe some of my Clemson friends (and I live in SC where they are everywhere) the way that Brownell convinced Radakovich to keep him, when he should have been fired this year, was the lure that he could get Zion. Family does have Clemson ties of some sort. As far as paying him? Clemson basketball and Brownell are both about as desperate as one can imagine. Figure they would do whatever it takes to bring in a player of that caliber. USC is really turning up the pressure also, but with Martin's success this year they aren't nearly in the desperate situation that Clemson is in.

Yeah, I'm not really one to point fingers at other schools when it comes to recruiting. Sometimes kids just like other schools more than UNC. Doesn't bother me a bit. TBS, I do feel like our recruiting is about to experience an uptick.Yeah, Zion just may like some other places better than UNC. I hope that changes but it seems to be the case. We look at everything as UNC fans. That isn't really the way it works for most of these kids. They aren't really fans.
I would like to see an offer yesterday. It would be a shame to see him leave the state.^ I'm ready to see UNC offers Baker on the front page! He is one of my favorites for 2019 and being an in-state kid, we need to lock him up.
I get the feeling it's either Clemson or SC. He could dominate either team for one year.Don't bet Zion leaves the state of SC to attend college, this is a Clemson vs USC fight and I think the cocks are slightly in the lead for now. Kid is in Clemson territory and has a ton whispers as well as family ties to Clemson but Frank Martin is turning heads and I think is the stronger bet.
Even if he includes us, duke, Ky it is nothing but resume fluff, don't buy that SMOKE.
I read in an article a month or so ago that Bol wanted to be recruited by UNC, I haven't heard or read a thing since with Bol and UNC in the same sentence. There has been a lot of chatter around here of a lack of effort and questionable attitude with Bol. He lived around Kansas City for a while and the word was his coaches and teammates didn't miss him when he left. Not sure if that will be a factor for Roy? Have you heard anything like that?
A lot of this has to do with Jalek. They are best friends.
He played well last night, and RW was showing him love.
Baker has attended multiple UNC games this past season. I will be absolutely disgusted if Baker ends up at moo. Ian Steere seems to have come out of nowhere. Rivals(3*) , 247(unrated) and Scout(not in database) seem to have very little on him. I read that Roy was watching him , but there was no mention of his stats.Yeah, can tell. Though it's likely that they won't be playing together by the time he gets here, potentially having his buddy Nickelberry on the roster wouldn't hurt either.
Doesn't sound like we've been hard on him, didn't even really mention us on his list. Did mention State though
But it's definitely a good start. Hope we see the "Roy visits Baker" headline more often.

The first 2 states listed in my OP produce more high end D1 talent than NY. Sorry but it's the truth.BS.
The talent up here is ridiculous. Don't be a homer cuz Roy hasn't grabbed anyone here since Danny.

Ashton Hagans says we're starting to recruit him. #32 in 2019 according to Rivals.

Hmmmmmm, maybe ole Roy is reading the tea-leaves with PG's coming in and (soon heading to the NBA). Maybe.
