OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

I don't have hatred for the school, just their fans. The school itself means little to me because their whole athletic department is a joke. To see their fans heads explode after all they have done and said about us would make me beyond happy.
I have a lot of friends that went there and have had some of my players play baseball there. The basketball fans are the worst. I played for Avent years ago so I have a soft spot for him.

Damn Mickey, we hit a nerve? Obviously I'm going to have to give Mickey a little spanking tonight.

No just goofing around, im not concerned about Duke at all. I do find some of the posts on THR where Duke being dirty is "basic logic" pretty funny. I'm sure the program operates in some gray areas but they've also backed off some recruits (Bowen for example) because of $henanigan$.

She's still getting a spanking.

So are you guys concerned at all? I mean if it can happen to a historically clean program like Auburn it can happen to anyone.
I am a little. Some of these charges carry a 20 year sentence. It wouldn't surprise me if someone started naming big name colleges even if it's a lie. That being said, our recruiting hasn't exactly been elite lately. I don't think Nike is dropping cash off at Luke Maye's house.

I think anyone who's anyone should be a bit concerned. The only reason I'm not more worried is that we haven't exactly reeled in a lot of OADs lately or high profile names. Might benefit us here in a way.

That being said, we're still a blue blood and top program. At the moment, I don't think anyone is safe from scrutiny. Not Kentucky, not Duke, not even us. It's not a well kept secret that everyone bends the rules. The question is how much.

I do believe this much. If anyone thinks no one at Kentucky was taking shoe money they're crazy. Whether or not the FBI can prove it remains to be seen.

Not scared.
2007: Are you scared UNC would ever be under investigation for academic fraud?
GSD Answer: Not scared and that's a stupid question.

Nothing is a given here. This can be done without the coaches knowledge. While I don't think it's likely, you're being naive if you don't think that there might be a small chance.

Sure. You could also ask me if I'm scared of one of our players being caught shaving points 20 years from now.. I mean, that could happen too. But I'm not scared of that either.

If we're involved, we're involved. I highly doubt it. With the colonoscopy we've been through over the past 6 years, it seems unlikely that we'd step out of line in any other way while under the microscope. So yeah, I acknowledge that it indeed could have happened. I just think the chances are so low it's not worth the worry.

Wasn't Moo involved with Bowen???

He also claims to be super connected with this FBI case.

Apparently he says he is a neighbor of someone on the bureau who tells him things or something, right?

I mean, I met a girl at Hooter's once who told me she used to do some pretty hard drugs with JJ Redick all the time. Seemed reasonable but she could have just been FOS as well.

I knew this guy, who knew this guy....

So it appears that Little is making his announcement tonight and that everyone is predicting it will be for us. This guy just worries me too much. The FBI report isn't even fully released. Not sure how he could be properly vetted by now. This might be the first time I hoped a top recruit doesn't pick us.

You don't trust Roy!?

Look, I know Roy has far more information than anyone on this site (despite what some people think of themselves) but this is an FBI investigation, not an NCAA one. He doesn't have access to any of that information and he hasn't been sitting in on the interrogations. Nobody knows what these guys are going to say to avoid jail time. We haven't had a lot of top ten recruits recently, but I'd say that we had a little bit of success without them. Too much shadiness around this guy to be going after him while we are already under investigation. At the very least we are going to be put on probation by the NCAA. You want to be caught with an ineligible player while on probation? No thanks.

Gotta agree with @tarheel0910 on this one.

I would add that although i do trust roy i dont trust his assistants. Not cause i “know” anything but cause i dont know a damn thing about most of em. And it was assistants that threw these programs under the bus with the fbi. Everyone has a price. It is true that our lack of success with oad’s means we prob didnt do anything But the last decade has produced way too many head scratches re unc athletics for me to have a warm fuzzy feeling

And i would be SHOCKED if we still want little. If so roy must know a hell of a lot more than we do. Well thats a given.

It looks like he is probably coming here. Either we still want him or he is trying to commit before we pull our offer.

Here's why you shouldn't worry about Little... you have a year before he plays a game. Between now and then I would think the truth would come out and if he has done some shady stuff (which most evidence points to) then he won't play. Unless this knocks you out of another recruitment for someone at the same position it's really no big deal.

What would worry me if I was a UNC fan is the NCAA. I could see them clearing Little then boning UNC by making him retroactively ineligible. I mean they've been trying to nail you guys for years, this could be a good opportunity for them if the AFAM shit doesn't work out.

I will say there is a lot of hypocritical stuff being said on THR right now, especially regarding Little and I actually admire that Steat is sticking to his guns rather than flip flopping just because it appears UNC is interested in a controversial recruit.

Good point, but it seems like there are so many people involved in this that it might take years to sort out. Plus it's the federal government. Their strength is not speed.

I know everyone throws out trust in Roy, and that's great, but unless Roy has a forensic accountant go through the Little family books he's going to have to wait on the FBI. I doubt that they received the money, I don't doubt that they were going to receive the money had the FBI waited a little longer.... so is that enough to make him ineligible? asking for money but not receiving it? I don't know honestly.

The worst thing that can happen is he be declared ineligible retroactively, it's not like UNC is going to pay him to play basketball so they won't be involved in the FBI junk.

Another issue to me is people just assume he is going to stay clean while he's at UNC. If the guy or his family is willing to take money before he gets here, it's pretty safe to assume he wouldn't have a problem doing the same thing once he is here. And if that happens while we are potentially on probation we are beyond screwed.

yeah i get that but given the fact that he won't be on campus all that long and he's already under the microscope, an FBI microscope btw, one would think he would keep his nose clean.

You would think. But never underestimate the human capacity for stupidity.

I do happen to fall in the 'trust Roy' camp on this one. But I definitely understand why people are concerned about Little.

I don't have a problem trusting Roy when he has all of the information. The problem in this case is that he doesn't have all of the info. Little's AAU coach that was negotiating the deal, on what is assumed to be on behalf of his family, is facing decades in prison. It's pretty easy for him to say he was just trying to help out his player and his family by being the middle man. Doesn't really matter if it's true.

I'm NOT a fan of this one bit. It's not prudent at all, given what's going on with this FBI investigation as well as our on-going waiting period for COI penalties. The optics of it look bad -- makes it look like Roy is flipping the bird to the COI. That's not really what it is, obviously, it just looks like that.

Of course, Roy isn't too big about worrying about optics. E.G. renting a house to P.J. Hairston. So dumb.
