OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

Who has declared that Coby is a can't miss, starts-from-day-one, OAD player? He was a four star for most of high school and only recently became a borderline five star. So he's basically Jalek Felton. Why are we assuming he's going to come in and not need an adjustment period?

Secondly, if you don't know Roy is the most stubborn man in the world at this point, something is wrong with you.

I've never watched the kid play, so I don't really know. All I'm saying is from the clips I've seen, and the analysis I've read, I've been lead to believe he can be better than what we've seen out of Seventh Woods so far. He will almost certainly need an adjustment period. That adjustment period can be the non-conference schedule at the beginning of next year. Roy has no problems throwing games away in that part of the season to try out some whacky lineups and to add to his mounting collection of unused TO's, so why not throw a game or two away to get the best PG on your roster to get comfortable playing PG at the college level?

And yes, I realize hoping Roy opens up to the idea of starting an impact freshman over a mediocre upperclassman is a fool's errand... but a man can dream.

But we were also lead to believe that Jalek was light years ahead of Seventh. Soooooo,.....

The point is everybody loves the new guy, even when the new guy might not be any better than the old guy.

Was he not? I'm not sure we have a big enough sample size to make that call. He got hardly any burn, so he predictably sucked when he got on the court for his few minutes a night. Then he got kicked off the team before he could really do anything. But what Seventh did wasn't all that good either - I'd call them a wash.

Exactly. I'm trying to be optimistic (rare for me) for next season. In order to do that, I need to believe that the best PG on our roster next year isn't on our roster this year - because outside of Berry, our PG situation was terrible. The tricky part is that not only does Coby have to be the best PG on our roster next year (IMO, pretty good chance of that happening), but Roy also has to allow him to start if he is the best PG on the roster next year (much lower chance of that part happening).

.

Felton was pretty much a nightmare in every game he played except 1. That's 1 game where I thought, "hey, maybe this guy doesn't suck balls." Roy saw it daily in practice and felt there was no way Felton could be trusted with more minutes. Seventh was not good either. But at least he tried hard and played admirable defense.

I don't know. Maybe much of the reason I'm in this thread and poasting what I'm poasting is to try and talk myself off the ledge about next year. I am a firm believer though that Coby shouldn't be forced into the PG role. I think it will hurt his development and confidence.

Did you guys ever find out why Felton was dismissed/left? Legit reasons not the rumors that ran rampant.

In a vacuum, I would agree. However I think Coby's value to Carolina Basketball is far larger than his development and confidence. He needs to succeed right away in order for other top recruits to consider UNC a destination where they can succeed (on their timeline). Sure, maybe Coby falls flat on his face - but even sporadic minutes would be considered a failure from a top recruit's perspective, even if he did fairly well in those spot minutes.

You can say that you're fine with top recruits not wanting to come here, and that we'll let him and Nas take time to develop and try to win one when they're juniors/seniors. There's two problems with that though: 1) neither will be here when they're juniors/seniors - they'll leave for the NBA if they've gotten the chance to showcase their skills, or transfer (or leave for the NBA anyways more likely, just at a lower draft position or UDFA) if they haven't. 2) The fact that we have no top recruits is what is making you and others nervous about this upcoming season. This is what it feels like when you don't have any top 50 recruits (outside of the two freshmen who I'm advocating giving as much PT as possible). We should want our top recruits to do our recruiting for us - makes it much easier on Roy.

I think Roy has said recently that Coby is a PG. I'm not sure if that is just talk or what but I assume Coby kind of wants to do that. He was pretty ball dominant on his team and was a good passer. I assume he thinks that is what he projects to at the next level. I don't know though.

carolina would be hard pressed to beat this michigan team, but a&m looks like shit.

i was actually pulling for them because i like their coach and his story...plus, f michigan

kstate is every bit as good as kentucky, certainly as athletic...and bruce has been here before.

i’m anyone but durham now, so idgaf.

Zags pissing me off against FSU. Missing tons of FTs and leaving guys wide open outside.

I had this argument with @heelz2345 earlier in the season, but Gonzaga CONTINUES to be the biggest chokers in college basketball. They enter every NCAAT with a good to great seed because of their shitty WCC conference, and then they proceed to bow out early in the tourney every year (save last year). They're LOL bad in the tourney. Makes me happy because a lot of their players this year were punks. Perkins in particular was jaw jacking the refs the entire game.

Also, screw Kentucky. As Sheed would say, "Ball don't lie." Justice prevailed in that shit show of a refereed game.

Perkins is a punk but I still needed them to win for all three of my money brackets (including the one on this board).

Yeah I was thinking they both had a shot at the FF once the craziness of the first two rounds shook out, but that obviously didn't happen. Was happier to see Kentucky knocked out. At this point, a 9 or 11 is guaranteed a spot in the Final Four, and if FSU can beat Michigan, we would be assured a 9 or 11 in the title game for Duke, Nova, or Kansas to beat.

Yep, there's like no way one of Kansas, Nova, or Duke doesn't win the title, which makes me sad. But 2 of the 5 on my list, Gonzaga and Kentucky, got knocked out tonight. So that's something.

Mentally prepare for Duke to win it all, against a lousy seed. Just like 2010.
