OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

Bradley got drafted in the first round and didn't even get 15 mpg. Nas will get 20-25. If he's not OAD, it will be because he ended up not performing up to expectations. It won't be because of Roy.

I agree him not performing up to expectations could be a reason for him not going OAD. But there’s also the possibility that he doesn’t get the minutes/opportunity to show that he is up to expectations. I realize a lot of NBA GMs look past the shortcomings of a player caused by system/opportunity, but it still could be a hindrance.

Bradley was drafted in the late 20s, who knows, if he had played 25-30 mins a night, maybe he would have been higher. There’s the chance that if the same thing happens with Naz, he decides, “well, #28 isn’t good enough for me to leave school, and next year I won’t have the dreaded ‘Fr.’ before my name, so I’ll get the burn I need to show out and put myself in the lottery”

I don't even think Roy could hold Nas back enough to keep him out of the lottery.

If Bradley gets 25-30 mpg, I bet he drops out of the first round. Freshman aren’t well conditioned enough to play those kind of minutes in Roy’s system, especially bigs. Just no way. Bradley was never in terrific shape and I believe he underperformed athletically at the combine. So one could argue that Roy got Tony into the first round by limiting his PT.

But Nas looks like a different beast. The one area that might hold him back would be his decision making. But if he absorbs the staff’s coaching and fully buys into the program culture, he’ll be efficient in his 20 mpg next year and go lotto.

"I feel that going to college another year won't hurt my draft stock, and it will probably help it, actually," Barnes says. "It'd be different if everyone jumped ship and I was returning to a team that wasn't going to be in the top 25. We have an opportunity to compete for a national championship."
I'm not saying that wasn't a factor, and he obviously stayed, but I do think if the lockout hadn't happened, we might have seen him go after one if he was a lock for top 5 (which is what Roy said was the case). It worked out well for all concerned, and I'm happy with the course that transpired, just was providing an article.

Sure, we can speculate that he might have gone. We can also speculate that he stays another year regardless of a threat of the lockout or not. I’d say each view carries the same weight.

Little is a One And Done, no doubt about it.

I'm interested to see how well he actually works in Roy's system. I think Little qualifies as the only true OAD player he has ever had.

Not sure what you mean by"true OAD," but Marvin was certainly a no doubt OAD.

You used to get tons of them. So did Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, etc. Only they used to stay at least 3 years. Now Syracuse has a guy going straight to the G league out of high school to make what... $30k max?

Plus a chance at endorsement money. I'm hoping the NCAA will wise up and go to the Olympic model after this FBI stuff. That would make too much sense, so they probably won't do it.

How much endorsement money is he really going to get though? If he was playing on televised games I would understand a bit but he isn't and he isn't a big name like some others.

Weeeelll, Marvin wasn't recruited and expected to be a OAD from the get-go, was he? That was also 13-14 years ago (damn). I don't remember Marvin Williams' recruitment all that well, because, at that time, I wasn't as tuned-in to the off-season stuff. I might have known who was supposed to return, and maybe who the new recruits were, but I probably didn't pay attention to their details a great deal.

The OAD thing has really become the norm in the last 8-10 years, I think. It's become much more of a yearly thing and it's almost like the OAD's get all the spotlight and the game has become their stage. UNC has not had OAD's like the dookies and UK. And, even the ones that have become a OAD player, they weren't really expected to be a OAD, with the exception of Barnes and he came back.

I don't want UNC to become a OAD factory like dook and UK. It sucks. I seriously hope that the model changes as soon as possible so those guys can bypass college altogether. I hate this OAD crap. I never liked guys leaving a year early back when I was a kid. Worthy was my first memory of a player not staying all 4 years. Then Jordan left. I hated that. I'd gotten used to the players being there for 4 years.

Nah... it's going to change. It has to. The NCAA looks like such hypocrites already. They need to just man-up and realize that they can't be millionaires and still have "amateur" athletics. They made it into the NON-amateur entity that it is now.

Well, Nike and Adidas seem to think $100,000 is a good amount. You're right about him not being as big of a name, but he'll get plenty of attention now that he is the first to do it. People are going to be interested to see how it goes. He'll probably end up with a Facebook show soon.

It has never been "amateur" athletics and will never be. Everyone knows that, but the ncaa doesn't want to admit it. I'm hoping they will change, but I see nothing in their past to suggest they will do what's right for the athletes.

$25,000 for a kid out of high school to play a sport... Not a bad deal for a year if he didn’t feel like going to class

Meh, a lot more chances to get exposed too. Talent in the g league is better than what he would face in college with a few exceptions. Games aren't televised, facilities aren't as nice, you ride a bus to games instead of flying... I just don't think it's a great idea. Now if he wanted to go to Europe and get paid I'd understand but still have the opportunity to get exposed.

So Kansas got a dose of 08, anyone think that Nova will get a dose of 16?

Doubt it but you never know. Michigan is built like a team that can give them problems but they will have to play very well on both sides to get it done. I don't really care either way though tbh.

Notre Dame took down the mighty UCLA 40+ years ago. I actually like ND. I liked them a lot more before they joined the ACC. It's not as easy to like them now. But, I still have an IRISH sweatshirt that I wear occasionally.
