OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

How you doing Mickey, haven't seen you in a while?
between coaching my kids baseball team, playing as much golf as humanly possible, work, and lack of anything basketball related to talk about I don't spend much time on the boards in the summer. had to check in after the draft and settle an avatar bet on the college basketball board.

What bet was that?

Headed to the links in a few minutes myself.

Unless Pinson figures out how to make a three, I don't see him making a team unless it's a two way contract.

Or if current NBA execs finally discover that there’s more to basketball than shooting 3s.

25 years ago, Pinson is drafted and has a 10 year career as a serviceable, quality role player.

Almost as dumb as some of your DI brethren who tried to argue with me that Duval was superior to Dennis Smith JR before the start of the season.
I mainly stick to premium over there, guys get caught up with rankings and have never actually seen half these kids play. I thought Zion was overrated before he picked Duke and continue to think so now.

Why is it worth it? Because 70% of the time they end up with nothing out of the deal. Sure, 1 in 4 is a hit and they end up with a Clint Capella. But most of the time, they end up with a player that provides little to nothing. I'm arguing that a proven 4 year college guy is at least guaranteed to offer something.

I agree with you that someone like Berry is likely to be better than someone like Greek Freak v2.0. However in the places where they're going to be potentially drafted, the risk reward play is what you need to go for.

Like if you put them on a scale of 1-100 where Nate Britt is 1 and LeBron is 100, the average ranking of their outcomes is probably something like Berry 20 Freakv2.0 15, so yes - Berry will probably turn out to be the better player. But the key is that Berry's average outcome of 20 is a series of outcomes that are all between 15 and 25. Whereas Freakv2.0 outcomes are a bunch of 5s but the occasional 85 that averages to 15. If your bench guys are all in the 30s, then you'd much rather take Freakv2.0, because none of Berry's outcomes put him in position to make your bench, but you may get lucky and get the 85 outcome from Freakv2.0.

he bet me in like February. I'd rather have Wendell Carter than either of them.
I agree about Wendell. I don’t think it was a stretch to consider Bamba over Bags if you look at their defense. Can Bags develop into a great defensive player?

I’m all in on Doncic fwiw. Dallas is building something if he hits.

Great layman statistical analysis of the point I tried to make before

No thanks. I’ll take $25 in my pocket over a small chance at $80.

That’s not what it is though. You have the opportunity to receive an envelope that contains $25 (Berry) or an envelope that either contains $5 or $85 dollars (Antetokoumpo). But either way, after you make your choice you’ll be able to exchange that envelope for $30 (worst player on your bench) if you so choose. Why would you ever take the first envelope?

Does this mean you're not going to pay me the $25 you owe me?

I continue to say, and dont mind the criticism for it, that zion would not start for unc if he had chosen us. Hes an amazing athlete. A stud for sure. And would start for most any team cause of that. But who would he beat out? He wouldnt be pg or a center so Maye? Nope. Kenny williams? Nope. Cam? Nope. Little? Mmmm maybe

You're absolutely correct that he wouldn't start for UNC if he had chosen us. But the question really is should he start for UNC. Same as with Nas. Will he start? Probably not. Should he start? Absolutely.

Mark my words, Roy will start Nas. Way too good to keep out of the lineup. With him, Kenny, Cam, Coby, and Luke we can build on that effective small ball lineup we employed last year.

Roy hates playing small ball though. How last year ended probably only made him hate it even more. I'd be beyond surprised if Roy starts the year off playing small. Nas will come off the bench and get his 20 minutes until he decides to go small. Once he does that Nas will get his 20 minutes.

Nas should be playing a hell of a lot more than 20 minutes. He needs 27-30. He's a freaking top 5 NBA pick next year.

Should? Probably, but you're crazy if you think he's going to get 30. Upperclassmen usually only get around 32 at the most. A freshman isn't getting 30. Nas might get close to 25 though.

I’m also not convinced Roy can actually the play the lineup he wants because Manley and Brooks are still young
Not as young as last year when Roy played that lineup. He may eventually switch to small ball, but I would be surprised if it happens before ACC play.

But I’m banking on Roy seeing the bigger picture here.
What bigger picture? That he needs to play a certain way because someone else wants him to? We're talking about a man that doesn't give a shit what his fans think. Why would you think he cares what a 16 year old thinks? If I didn't know better, I would think some of you guys haven't watched UNC basketball for the past 15 years.
