OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

What do we gain by beating any team then unless that team outranks us?

I'm going to assume you are kidding or don't pay attention.
Well, I can't tell. If you grew up in the state, then there ought to be some value to playing and beating them, as often as possible.

I wasn't kidding and I do pay attention as much as possible. You could have answered "Yes" or "No." That way I would know.

It's not just a ranking thing. You can get meaningful wins against teams that aren't ranked. The Clemson game last week is probably going to end up being a meaningful win because it's going to look good on our resume come seeding time. A big rival has meaning games all the time, regular season and tournament. I'm not saying they aren't a rival, I'm just saying they aren't a big rival.

I've said countless times on this board that I grew up in NC.

How quickly we forget... back in the early 2000's when we were down, ESPN left us in the dust and hyped the shit out of dook-Maryland. Once we got back up they returned to calling it one of the greatest rivalry in sports. They did the same with us and state when they got crappy and dook got good.

My family moved to NC in the early 70's and when I was old enough to remember, all anybody cared about was state or Carolina. Hardly anyone pulled for dook. Probably half the dook b-ball fans today are former state fans (whose ABC-ness outweighed their loyalty to the Wolpfack).

When I was a kid, in elementary school in the mid-late 70's, the day after the Carolina/State game was a MAJOR deal. You endure about 5 or 6 years of that as a kid, it's ingrained!

Then, I was living in Charlotte in the mid-90's, and my room mate's girlfriend was Todd Fuller's older sister. So, the rivalry got a new spark for about 2 years or so. She was hard enough to deal with on a non-sports-related basis... but, when we played State? Sheezus! I was pleased that one time her association got us decent seats in Reynolds.

I call them moodookies. Thirty years ago you could go to any high school in NC outside derm and you couldn't scare up a dozen dook fans. Then moo got busted and Dick Vitale fell in love with the rat king and the rest is history.

Exactly. The Carolina - Duke rivalry owes a lot of its hype to ESPN. There are barely any Duke fans (who are alums) in North Carolina, relative to how many Carolina and State folks there are.

I've said it a hundred times and I'll say it again, Carolina - State is a true rivalry because it's brother against brother, father against son, etc. Look no further than the Dorn family. Dad and mom went to Carolina, brother goes to Carolina, other goes to State. That dynamic plays itself out with families (all families, not just athletes) all over the state. The same dynamic does not play itself out with Duke and Carolina.

Carolina - Duke is a competitive rivalry built on both programs being good for a long, long time in basketball. Carolina - State is a true rivalry, built on hatred and divided families.

The only hitch is the ESPN Duke-Carolina rivalry has been around for so long that the younger generation just assumes it is THE main rivalry. They're a rival, sure, but so is State. To say otherwise means you're uneducated or just intentionally being obtuse.

Troof!

There were barely ANY dook fans around me growing up... anywhere!

Ifs and buts were candy and nuts... but, if there'd never been a Coach K (a yuge if, I know), then I doubt there would even be a rivalry between them. I'm aware that the Bubas and Foster years had their moments. But, if you take out the K Dynasty? And, let's assume that they float in and out of mediocrity as State has done? Then the HBO Film "Battle For Tobacco Road" is never even made. So, for that, I am thankful for Shuh-Shef-Skee and his prominence. Without it, we'd have had fewer memories and less to look forward to in the winter months. We'll miss him when he's gone and they go into the inevitable slump.

It's funny you guys mention the rivalry we have with state and the one we have with duke. Because as you all know, my parents were Yankees when they moved down here and had me. Growing up my perception was that state was a joke and duke was the main rival, which competitively is true. But all I ever heard and saw was how great duke was and all their teams that won year after year, while Carolina was sort of like the knight in shining armor. I hated JJ Redick and the way dookies fawned all over him and the way ESPN seemed to have a hard on for anything K or Blue Devil related. They were the evil empire in my mind.

Seeing us come back down 9 in 05 in Chapel Hill cemented my loyalty for me. But the impression it left me was that state was the after thought and dook had been our main rival since the early 20th century.

Despite being down double digits pretty much from tipoff, State only managed to ATTEMPT 11 threes (making 3). We hassled them on the perimeter and did not let up. Man that was beautiful. I think I'll watch it some more today.

Maybe I'm the only one who noticed this, but when Britt hit a three in the second half there was a weird pause in the action like all 10 players (and the crowd) were expecting to look for the rebound and it took a half-second for #ncstatelol to realize they had to get the ball out of the basket and inbound it, and for the Heels to head back on D.

Oh yea in the david thompson era and for a few years later the state rivalry rivaled the dook rivalry today. They were better than us and they rubbed our noses in it. They went on a steady decline from there while we maintained and got better. They had a brief flash with corchiani and gugliotta but basically irrelevant.

That's when I came on the scene... right after the National Championship, the 75-79 era. I forgot when Norm Sloan left, but even Valvano had them with a little swagger for a while. I'll never forget being in Reynolds and donning UNC gear and they beat us and it was hell getting out of there!

You forgetting that '83 team with Thurl Bailey, Sidney Lowe, Derrick Whittenberg, Lorenzo Charles, Terry Gannon, etc?

I wonder if state, and also Wake Forest, will be able to get back to where they were back in the early 00s. Some of those Wake teams with Chris Paul were really good.

Finished 4th in ACC regular season, but got Whittenburg back right before the ACCT. Won the ACCT and then won the national championship.
Yeah they lost Whittenburg in their first game against UVA. If I remember right he was tearing it up before he went down. If he'd been there the whole season they probably don't lose half of the games they did and are a high tourney seed.

If I remember correctly there was a year where we played them at their place and it was number one vs two in nation and it was a classic. Maybe the 05 year?
