OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

That may equate to Redick's flopping but Allen is a different animal. His transgressions are not at all similar to what you're talking about with McCants and Brice.
Basically -- and to tie it in with my sports racial stereotypes thread -- Duke's players that act out are white and thus their indiscretions are more "cheap shot" related like JJ's leg kick on 3s, Allen's tripping, etc. Our players that act out (We have fewer than Duke for sure) are black and thus it's "thug" stuff like McCants.

Redick went on ESPN and read poetry he wrote about being hated while sitting at half court at Hansbrough Indoor, for Chrissake.

ETA- Julez beat me to it

Dantay Jones
Justise Winslow
Henderson

Duke has players of all colors who are complete assholes. They learn it from their coach.

I never disliked reddick personally. Now kenny dennard, laettner, henderson and allen...yes. I think they are just bad people and dirty players. I never liked mcants or okoren or esp bruce buckley. I was around buckley and okoren a lot at gville towers and they were complete assholes. And buckley was indeed prob the dirtiest unc player ever.

So are you suggesting that we don't/shouldn't expect that type of behavior from white kids but we kind of expect it from black kids?

Right- it's not like we all loved McCants or went around defending him or telling everyone he is misunderstood.

THN needs to go to the penalty box til after lunch.

I think K teaches his players to come close to dirty play. I don't think he instructs them to trip anyone or purposely hurt other players. But I think he really pushes the envelope with "hustle" and "playing to win". And I think he teaches his kids to attempt to get in the heads of opposing players. Combine that with the types of players that duke brings in (many of them are privileged kids, read: bratty) and then you get a recipe for dirty play - Singler giving titty twisters, Allen's constant tripping, Laettner's shenanigans, Henderson's assault on Hansbrough, etc.

No lol, I'm just saying that America is much more okay with hating a white player than a black player.

I think I agree. And my hypothesis on why that is, is because white guilt attempts to excuse the behavior from black kids and not from white kids. Almost to say, "oh, that poor black kid doesn't know any better" and "that white kid is from a good home, he should know better."

I think kay is so intense and so pushes his players to be intense that they sometimes go overboard with it. That rah rah shyt only takes u so far.

I disagree completely. People would be scared to tear him down for fear of being called racist for not understanding black culture.

We need some examples of black guys (in college) acting like Allen.

Or we can talk about Draymond Green, who seems to me to get torn down for being a cheap shot jerk like Allen. But pros are different than college.

I was playing in intramurals at unc. We won the whole thing. (Volleyball too, same guys). As our reward we played the grad school intramural champs. They had several former unc players as well as ex players from state and wake. Of course they killed us. But in the process while attempting to rebound i was violently shoved in the back so hard my head whiplashed and i face planted. I looked up and it was bruce fking buckley, already well known as the biggest douche athlete on campus. Nearly 7 ft tall shoving someone 6 ft tall to the floor With a 30 pt lead. I shook it off and ran back down only to have him deliver a forearm shiver to my head as i entered the lane. "THIS IS MY HOUSE!" He screamed at me as i laid stunned on the floor. Everything stopped, (of course there was no call, the student refs were in awe of officiating their heroes and didnt call shit against them), the only sound was the ball bouncing off somewhere. I got up, Smiled, and punched him square in the sternum with the heel of my hand. (If you've never experienced that it expels all the air out of your lungs for like two minutes, learned it in karate) We were dq'd. He was still writhing on the floor gasping for breath as we left the gym. Word spread fast and I didnt have to buy a beer in chapel hill for several weeks. I heard several times he came to granville looking for me but noone would tell him shit.

This guy gets it.

Larry Johnson
Allen Iverson
Derrick Coleman
Joakim Noah
Mark "Mad Dog" Madsen
Danny Ainge
Bobby Hurley
Marshall Henderson

I'm not seeing it.

Speaking of brackets, OOTB should do this one. I think I know how it would end, though.

To illustrate my point, some of the most influential members of our national championship teams and their Rivals rankings:
Harrison Barnes 5-star #2
Brice Johnson 4-star #49
Kendall Marshall 4-star #32

The premise of your poast is correct, however I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that these 3 never won a championship. Even if by "national championship teams" you meant those that played in a national championship game, Brice works but the other two never did.

I completely agree that Roy's coaching style requires more highly skilled players than 3 stars though. His goal is to get as many possessions for each team as possible. That works when you have the better players - it backfires when you don't though.

THN needs to go to the penalty box til after lunch.

THN hates hockey so I doubt he gets this reference.

I said almost national championship teams in addition to our actual title teams. To me, Final Four counts as almost.

They need to expand the dookies to at least two brackets... 8 is NOT enough!

Also, Rick Fox? I understand Psycho-T being on there, and maybe(?) Montross, but Fox? I don't recall him being universally hated in college.

I asked the same thing. Maybe because he got Vanessa Williams? I was envious, but not angry!

To illustrate my point, some of the most influential members of our national championship teams and their Rivals rankings:

Tyler Hansbrough 5-star #10 (overall prospect rank)
Marvin Williams 5-star #11
Tywon Lawson 5-star #9
Sean May 5-star NR but #1 PF
Raymond Felton 5-star NR #1 PG
Harrison Barnes 5-star #2
Brice Johnson 4-star #49
Kendall Marshall 4-star #32
Marcus Paige 4-star #34
Reyshawn Terry 4-star #72
Wayne Ellington 5-star #8

See what I'm getting at here? Our best teams were littered with 5-stars and the occasional 4-star. We've virtually never dealt with 3-stars. The only 3-stars I see that have ever gotten anything more than mop-up minutes for us is Will Graves, Byron Sanders, Jackson Simmons, Desmond Hubert, and Stillman White.

We've never been a collection of underdogs, ever. Roy has aways needed talent to win. That's not a knock on him, it's just a fact.

I said almost national championship teams in addition to our actual title teams. To me, Final Four counts as almost.

Eh, I don't see the word almost in your other poast, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt - you've earned it.

Although to further roast you - Barnes and Marshall never made a Final Four either.
