OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

How do you guys handle it? It's the worst feeling in the world, and every time I watch a team I hate just steamrolling people it makes my blood boil. I'm the youngest here at 22, and my temper is bad when it comes to sports. Real bad.
Not being 22 helps.

Seriously though, you'll mellow as you get older. As other people have said, you take on responsibilities that place sporting events in the proper perspective. They're still a very important part of my life but as Dean Smith said, if you make every game a life and death proposition, you'll be dead a lot.

Some of you guys have talked about the anger you felt at losing to dook in the past. I admit it's something I struggle with. Given everything that's happened in the world of sports.

I missed the old Yankee dynasties while watching the Sox come back from 3-0 down. The patriots were a giant turd of a franchise before darth sidious and his sidekick showed up. And up until around 1998, hell even 2009, we had the edge on dook.

I was a lunatic too when I was that age. Most likely you'll mellow out when you get older and have more important things in your life. Believe me, all of us were there once. It does suck for you though that we're on the bad end of the rivalry when you're that age. Because it does mean more to you than it does to me. But when I was 22, we had Stack and Wallace and then Jamison and Carter. The 90s were a good time for the rivalry.

My random thoughts after watching the game and skimming this thread (tl;dr version: GFY):

- As many of you have already said, our defense against the drive-and-kick was terrible. That works against a lot of teams, but the one thing K does is recruit guys who can flat out shoot the ball. Kennard and Allen killed us. And honestly, many of their shots were well defended. All you can do is tip your hat.

- Luke played a pretty good game, especially on the offensive end of the floor. He has a really good stroke and I'm comfortable with him shooting anywhere from 21 feet in.

- Loved the energy we got from off the bench (think @TarHeelNation11 mentioned this in-game). We got solid minutes from Pinson obviously, but Bradley, Woods, and Robinson all made contributions. Those guys were all in for a long stretch at the end of the first half and actually stopped a min-run by dook and reclaimed the lead.

- Why did Berry only play 32 minutes? I had the volume down (trying to listen to the radio broadcast). He didn't have his greatest game, but we're better with him on the floor. He needs to be playing 36-38 with breaks coming before TV timeouts IMO.

- My word, Tatum is an embarrassment. He's obviously very skilled, but the way he carries himself on the court and the decisions he makes are cringe-worthy. I haven't watched much of dook this season but have read the criticisms about him auditioning for the NBA. That's no joke. He cost them a couple possessions in the second half with horrible shots.

- Re: streaming the game, my ESPN feed on Sling TV was easily a full minute behind the network broadcast. I've never had that kind of delay before. I switched over to the network broadcast and muted the TV. I listened to the radio broadcast instead, which was actually about 10 seconds behind the network broadcast. That's pretty typical, I've found.

- The ACC's network coverage of the game was terrible. They kept cutting away to the benches, to the crowd, etc. while the effing game was going on. Missed lots of game action as a result. They'd cut back to the game and somebody had just scored but you had no idea what happened based on video alone. That's just piss-poor production quality.

- The older I get, the less I care about this particular game. It's still a loss and it still hurts and it still hurts a little more than losing to Miami or Georgia Tech. But I'm not despondent about it. It is, after all, worth just as many losses as either of those two games. We know what we need to do and this team has all the components to finish the regular season strong. I still think UNC is a no-brainer top 10 team and has a realistic shot of another Final Four appearance.

ETA: Cheez and crackers, what was up with the free throws?!
Oh, one item I forgot to add to my tl;dr poast.

I knew the game was over just before the under-4 minute timeout. Allen came back into the game with 4 fouls. JBII had him one-on-one on the wing. I was pleading for him to drive right at Allen to either force a 5th foul or get an poorly-contested shot going towards the basket. Instead, JBII pulled up and shot a 3-pointer that clanged off the front of the rim. We only scored 7 points in the 4:05 that followed: 1 3-pointer by JJ and 4 FTs.

I remember that shot. It was a terrible shot. Both Berry and JJ made some poor decisions last night and we can't have that as they are the team leaders. I put in my tl;dr poast that Berry needs to get back to driving the ball more. But he tried a couple times last night and it didn't work out. I thought he was getting hit a lot on his way to the basket but the refs let them play last night on both ends. Berry probably knew that and felt he wouldn't get the calls. And his diminutive stature has been detrimental a few times in the last few games. He's not getting the calls he was earlier in the season and it's allowing defenders to hold him or bump him preventing him from exploding towards the hoop. He's not been finishing at the rim with anywhere near the efficiency that he was earlier in the year.

Another minor note: It sucks that after we've all been clamoring all season for Kennedy to go strong to the rim and dunk it, when he finally did he got held (with no call) and didn't finish the play.

That really sucked. I was chatting with a friend of mine who roots for dook, and he even agreed Meeks got fouled.

Yeah, but as Bilas said, Meeks has to finish that even when fouled. Especially considering the foul occurred on the floor before Meeks even was going up to the rim. In other words, the foul had zero bearing on Meeks' inability to finish that. It was just later in the game and Meeks didn't have enough lift at that point.

Wake smokes moo 88-58. What are the odds that Gottfried gets the boot? I'm wondering if Brownell's days are numbered, too.

Did Roy go after Dennis Smith, Jr.? Seems like such a waste to go there. Oh well.

ETA:

never mind

Man, had a big deal on raider a couple of years ago when there was a certain poster claiming we were seriously in it for DSJ and others telling him we weren't. Then, when he committed to state college, he, typically, did a lot of backtracking IIRC. Just another example of someone claiming they have the inside scoop when it ain't necessarily so.

VT banking 3 pointers from the right side . . and Perrantes can't match the 3 pointer.

Winning on the road in the ACC is a bitch.

Nice W for the Hokies this evening . . !

VT just gave us a gift.

So much more entertaining than some random music show I hear is going on.

Wonder if there's any truth behind this. Doesn't seem very confidence-inspiring to future employers (aka NBA teams).

At first I thought this meant Gottfried was fired after the ACCT before I read through the whole tweet. I'm not sure it would really mean anything to NBA teams, there are plenty of "me-first" kind of players in the league, plus, this seems more of a "I'm not gonna be here after this season, and I don't want to hurt my draft stock playing in these lousy tournaments and potentially getting hurt" kind of move, which seems smart, in my book

Semi related, it's very funny to me that State is so bad this year because I had so many people tell me that once Dennis Smith got to Raleigh, he was gonna save the program and they were gonna go to the Final Four and he would win NPOY and all this other stuff. Granted, if we lose to them in Raleigh, those people will act like all that happened, but it's hilarious to me that they are doing so bad
