OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

Man this home stretch of the schedule is brooootal.

Out of nine games we have duke twice, UVA (currently second in the standings) twice, plus Louisville and ND (currently T-3). Oh and then the Wolpfack in Rawlee which should be a win but you can never put it past 'em to all of a sudden play above their heads when they see that Carolina blue.

One thing is for certain, we CANNOT slip up in either of the games against Pitt.
Damn skippy. Gonna be fun .... I hope.

@UNC '92 I see you on Four Corners. Props to you on fighting that battle.
Yeah, it's one of a few reasons why raider is the way it is today. Is it just me or is it ironic that he wonders why threads over at raider go down the toilet when his input is typically what you saw yesterday?

It's one of the main reasons and has been for years. And I've said as such multiple times on this thread and the original version.

At least you get UL and ND at home. Louisville has been in the ACC for 3 years, Duke has played at UL 3 times. Hell you guys even got FSU at home this year. Guess Roy is scared of true road games...

Brace yourselves for bad news on pinson. Once again injuries keep a season from reaching full potential. I know everyone has them but i would challenge fans of any school to show me how injuries have derailed their title runs like they have unc.

I know Pinson is a glue guy, but in my opinion, there is enough talent on this team that we should be able to overcome his absence.

Now, I'm definitely not saying we will, because I don't think we will. But I think we should be able to and I'm not sure why we can't.

What's the word on his injury?

I'd be fine with holding him out until the ACCT, letting him use that as a tune up (since Roy DGAF about that anyways), and then hopefully being good to go come the NCAAT when it really matters.

But, as Strum has pointed out, I'm not the coach - so I guess we'll see how Roy plays it.

I disagree. From a basketball talent standpoint, you might be right. But from a personality make up, we don't have another one of him. We need his leadership and energy. No one else provides that. And that's not something guys learn. It's an innate ability. We can't expect Nate Britt to all of a sudden develop that kind of leadership and enthusiasm just because Theo might be gone. He's never displayed it before. When Roy put the team together, he was counting on that from Theo. So IMO, if he's out the rest of the year, it's a much bigger loss than just looking at it on the surface.

Well, I think everyone knows it isn't just a rolled ankle. There may be news at some point today but if not hopefully tomorrow.

I'm not gonna disagree with your poast, but it does make me sad. It saddens me that we only have one guy who's a true leader and he's not even one of the best 3-4 players on the team (talent-wise). If you look back at our last two title teams, there was leadership everywhere. The '05 team had an embarrassment of leadership with Felton, May, and Jawad Williams. '09 had Frasor, Lawson, and Hansbrough. All of those guys were either vocal leaders or "get on my back cuz I'm about to carry us to a win" type of guys.

I wish this year's squad had more of that. I really do think we have the talent for a natty. I just don't think we have the mental makeup / personality. Which saddens me.

I agree with all of that. Joel is close but he doesn't quite do it for me like Ray Felton did. I'd argue a little bit on you saying Lawson was in that same class. I didn't think so. I think Joel is more Lawson in personality make up than he is Ray Felton. It makes me sad too but recruiting is a crap shoot. You never know who will turn out to be what. Roy obviously saw some leadership skills in Joel, JJ and probably Meeks too. But it just hasn't resonated with this group of guys.

Yeah, Kennard is an excellent offensive player. But he can't guard his shadow.

I don't think I'm ready to call Kennard the best player in the ACC for the same reason I wouldn't call Cat Barber the best last year, and that's because the team has to be winning. Don't get me wrong, I think he has a lot of talent and I think he's among the best in the conference, but you gotta be winning to be in the conversation, especially when your team was the runaway preseason choice.

Duke will finish top 3 in the ACC and that's after spotting everyone a couple games. I won't consider them a championship contender just yet, but that was a big win for them last night - the kind of win that can jumpstart a team. And from reading a little about it, it looks like they're starting to figure things out. Tatum wasn't the black hole he has been. And Kennard is their best scorer and has been all year. They still have some issues - no PG and weak up front - but they have the talent to overcome that. UNC fans need to be hoping for Trip to have another outburst and create some drama.

Their defense was mighty impressive last night. I know ND is a jump shot-centric team anyway, but Duke completely closed off the paint last night. Except for the occasional Colson bucket, ND was relegated to bad jumpshots all night.

I don't like reading that. I didn't watch and the little I read didn't really talk about duke's defense. But if Duke figures it out defensively, they'll be a monster. Their collection of players have all the defensive potential in the world - quick, long and super athletic. Kennard and Allen will never be great defenders. But Tatum, Jackson, Jones, Jefferson, Bolden and Giles can all be very good defensively.

I watched the whole game. Granted, I'm very green when it comes to dissecting basketball Xs and Os, but from what I saw, Duke looked much better defensively. I believe they put up a stat at halftime saying Duke, on average, allows 38 PPG in the paint. At half last night, they had allowed 8.

Well, like you said, I think ND is a jumpshooting team. I'd be shocked if we didn't have our way with them in the paint. That is if they play man defense on us. I'm not sure if K will go zone on us but from the looks of it, they should.

Tatum is supposed to have been bad most of this season right? He looked pretty damn good last night.

Vasturia couldn't throw the ball in the ocean last night- Duke's D didn't strike me as anything particularly impressive.

That was the big part of what I gathered from reading about their game. He's been a selfish, albeit talented ball stopper on offense and a disinterested defender up until now. But if he's accepting his role and playing within the team concept, that spells trouble. He might be the most talented player in the ACC.

Dook played really really well. And on top of playing well they played really well w loads of foul trouble. Amile n Kennard both fouling out. First game I've watched ND but they looked horrible. Dooks D seemed to make them play further out than they felt comfortable with and resulting in some bad shots. If dook starts to "get it". Watch out. The plethora of talent those yahoos have is embarrassing almost.

They could finish top 3, but they are currently 7th, and have to get ahead of VT, ND, Louisville, and FSU. They still have to play us twice, FSU again, and at UVA, so I think they lose at least 2 more, but could lose 3 of those 4. If they drop the UVA game and the FSU game, those schools would have the tiebreaks over Duke, just like Louisville and VT do(Technically, FSU currently has the tiebreak as well, but if they split, it becomes more complicated). They also have to go to Miami, a team that beat us and had the lead at Cameron at the half. There is a lot that could happen to result in them getting in the top 3, and if that happens, Kennard will probably win POY, but for me, that won't be right to award a player from a team that significantly underachieved based on preseason predictions.

Someone should start a "Non UNC ACC games" thread... oh wait, never mind.
Yeah, the lack of organization on that board fuggin kills me. Mods do a lousy job on this site of keeping things organized. Happens on Blue Heaven too. A mod will start a thread -- let's say about a kid committing -- and then pin it, and then everyone else is either too dumb or too ignorant to notice it and we'll get 2-4 more threads about the same GD thing and then another thread asking "why isn't there a thread on XYZ committing??"

Same thing on Radar. They'll have 4 ****in threads going on at the same time about the same damn thing.

LMAO at radar having three threads about the duke game. To make matters worse one of them is titled NCAA fix. Guess they are trying to give pack pride a run for their money.

Not sure if you caught any of the game - but there were some points there where a fix seemed like the most logical explanation (there was a string of 5 or so calls in a row that were so preposterous that seemed a bit much even for terrible officiating. You know its bad when the broadcasters are wondering what they hell is going on). Now, the NCAA being behind that is somewhat absurd, much more likely to be a rogue official.

As for the multiple threads on the same topic - it's because G7 just DGAF about looking to see if there are other threads on the topic, and just poasts. He's done that several times this season where the mods have had to combine a thread of his into one that was already started. To give the Mods the benefit of the doubt as to why they haven't fixed this one yet, it's probably because he doesn't title his threads anything meaningful. His one on the ND/Duke game is titled a very descriptive: "Wow".

LOL good shout on his non-descriptive naming of threads. His threads are generally titled something like :

"Wow.."
"...And in other news"
"So I heard somethin'..."
