OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

I mean, we knew some of the flaws on this team. Those flaws have shown up. We can counter those flaws by shooting well, which should be a strength. It hasn't been lately and we can't win when that is the case. That is the issue on offense. We knew it would be. We thought we would shoot well. I don't see that changing (not whether we shoot well but whether we need to in order to win). Berry isn't all of a sudden going to become a true PG. Our bigs aren't going to go nuts on the offensive boards. The only thing that can really change on offense for this team is Felton getting better or us hitting shots.

I don't think we saw the defensive issues on the perimeter being this bad. So that blows. I have some ideas on what I think would help (probably not what others think) but it doesn't matter. Those things won't happen.

BPI has us at 12 with SOS at 1. RPI has us at 10 with SOS at 4. Kenpom has us at 13 with SOS at 2.

BPI has State at 63 with SOS at 42. They have RPI has State at 59 with SOS at 79. Kenpom has State at 65 with SOS at 87.

I'm not sure I'd say 12 points @ UVA (the best defensive team in the country) counts as a blowout, but if it does, State losing by 16 @ Clemson, 30 @ ND, and 17 @ UVA certainly do.

We have more wins against the top 25 and 50 in the 3 metrics than they do, and while they may have a victory against Duke that is currently higher rated than any of ours, we have more quality wins and are pretty much even in bad losses.
I understand that a lot of the metrics are in our favor, but in the eyes of the committee signature wins are extremely important. They have two, we have none. Also, Wofford. At home.

I've said nothing since Saturday at noon and still have nothing good to say about that game. Disgustingly awful (and avoidable) bad defense cost us that game.
Okay I'll say one thing then I'm done. I vowed along with @toophly1124 that after last year's title run, I would never criticize Roy again because it's hard to criticize back-to-back championship game appearance.

So I will simply state this: I have zero clue what the thought process is on only playing Jalek ~3 minutes a game. Zero clue. That number should have a 1 in front of it, at a minimum, I would think. But again, I'm not going to criticize Roy. Just simply stating I don't understand his decisions with respect to #5.

He needs more time. It would help Berry and help the team IMO. Dude is a trainwreck on defense but hell, everyone else kind of sucks as well there now. People have said he sucks at practice but we need him to play. Hell, he played well Saturday and still didn't get any run. I don't get it either.

Gary . . I thought we'd beat State too . . we had 5 days rest, we were coming off a loss, Roy hates the wuffies, we were at home.

I'm not so sure about tomorrow night's game.

I do hope you are right tho . .

you’re right on and i agree with your sentiments.

i do think they’ll be ready to play and i don’t think clemson is as explosive as state is on the offensive end.

i thought 7-4 before duke and i still believe it...see you tomorrow night on here, unless i decide to go up there.

I'd disagree we have none since we've beat 4 teams currently in the top 25 in both polls. You can say their best win is better than our best win, and it is. But we have more good wins than they do with multiple chances to match their signature win, and Wofford at home is as bad in my book as UNCG at home, except UNCG doesn't have the best 3 point shooter in the country.

I agree with this. The design is the problem. Roy just won't adjust to the changes in the game. For better or worse the 3 has become a huge part of the game and Roy refuses to change the scheme to account for it. That is who he is though. As long as he's still winning at a high level he's not going to change.

This post confuses me. Roy sat his only true big. Our 5 is shooting over 40% from the 3 and this team takes more 3s than any under Roy.

Why are people on here and in the media (Giglio) talking Moo vs. Carolina tourney resume? It's not even February. What a futile discussion right now.

BTW... is there any doubt at all that Moo will shoot under 25% from 3 in their next game and will lose? Any at all?

Because it's a message board and people discuss things that don't matter all of the time. Are you now taking your cues from radar and becoming a thread monitor?

No doubt at all.

What in the actual hell.....

Tell me that's a fake account.
The way the academics side of UNC is run, I'm not at all surprised if it's a real account.

And you KNOW if this gets picked up nationally and folks ask the question of why, someone from the academic side of the university will come out with the most deaf of tone deaf responses about "we don't accept everyone."

Not at all. It's just that I have a hunch both teams' resumes will look a few degrees worse by March than they do now. So it's a useless discussion.

Nope, been fb friends with him for over a decade. Its him.
Doesn't surprise me one iota.

Well, let me adjust... it only surprises me because Donald Williams and his family is African-American. If it happened to, say, Eric Montross' kid, it 100% wouldn't surprise me.

But hey, let's keep bringing in those international students because it checks our diversity box and makes our statistics look better!!

a) I don't imagine they would comment on individual admissions but b) what would you expect them to say? Kinda confused here.

I would hope they wouldn't say anything. They're in a lose-lose position.

You know me well enough to know that this strikes at a bigger issue I have with UNC and that's they (and many other schools) are too obsessed with their statistics. There's something to be said for West Virginia who truly serves its state in terms of guaranteeing admissions if you achieve certain metrics.

I think it's much more important to truly serve your constituents (the state of North Carolina and your alumni base) than it is to, say, climb from 6th to 4th on the rankings list of top public universities. I think it certainly wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if Carolina fell a few spots on these national rankings lists. It might make folks in power wake up and realize there's more to an applicant than just their score metrics.

/rant over.

Just when I think you couldn't get any more arrogant about going to UNC, you post this.
I'm not arrogant about going to UNC. Doesn't make me any more special than any one who went to any other school. I'm just saying if a kid has good grades, he typically doesn't dream of going to ECU or A&T. Look at Georgia. Kids dream of going to UGA or Tech, they don't dream of going to Southern or Valdosta State or Georgia State. But ultimately, that's just where they end up.

In fact, arrogance has always been my biggest problem with UNC. There's a culture of smugness and holier-than-thou that permeates the PTB at the university portion of UNC (and some of the athletic department and the fanbase) that has always bugged me.

I'm sure I come across as arrogant on here, but arrogant is nowhere near what people who know me personally would describe me as.
I'm not saying you are completely arrogant, just arrogant about this particular subject. Most people think too much of themselves on at least one subject.

Just said this on raider, but I'm going to add it over here too:

It's an extremely childish reaction by Donald Williams, to be quite honest. Carolina was my dream school, too, and like Daja, I didn't get accepted as a high school senior. Did I give up? No. I enrolled at a different university, did two semesters, re-applied as a transfer, and got accepted to Carolina. If you apply as a transfer after one year, all they do is look at your high school requirements again. They don't even look at your first 2 semesters of college unless you fail a class. I'm sure she could get in as a transfer. It's not an ideal situation, but it's still an option...

I'm actively saying in this thread I wish Carolina would drop their standards and fall down the USNWR (or whatever) rankings a bit. I've always said on here I wish more of the "common folks" were accepted to UNC. Right or wrong, UNC purports an aura/stereotype of being elitist, while Moo carefully crafts a stereotype of representing the common man.

Neither are true 100%, but often in today's world, perception is reality.
