OOTB Carolina Basketball Discussion Thread

Very few probably remember Pete Budko. I was a kid when I saw them the first time... maybe 10. Anyway, his name always stuck with me.

Looking back now, he looks like he could have been on-set with Marilyn Chambers!

His son lives in Carolina beach. Met him about ten years ago and see him out a lot. He had a punk band called “sacred cash cow” and my son was the drummer. He’s prob 6’7 or so. Met Pete at his wedding. He still has the hair.

Nice comeback tonight. So unexpected. Could hardly play worse for 9.5 of last 10 mins, up 10 squandered.

I get cuse is quirky to play, and while he had a lot of points - nance just isnt “it”. No alpha dog in him. None. Plays timid, afraid, hesitant- will never want to be the clutch guy (though he was in the right place for the game winner tonight).

Great that they got the win over a ahem very physical cuse team. Pure rugby or street fighting in second half, few calls - which helps the slower less talented team (cuse).

I hope it’s last heels game I have to hear Reece Davis and the woman announce (Doris Burke? Boris dork?)

I don't think Nance has played all that well either but this is now the 2nd game winning/tying bucket he's had for us and that Ohio State shot he definitely wanted to be the clutch guy. I'll get on Nance for things but he's been good in the clutch.

And yeah, holy shit the announcers were BAD. Doris saying the Cuse PG shouldn't have been called for a flagrant is unreal and every time Bacot played defense she thought it was a foul. I'm not usually one of the mute the TV fans but if it went into OT I was going to.

A win is a win but that was ugly. RJ made some huge plays and hope he wakes up today not feeling like total crap because that's definitely a concussion.

thought it was good win because i’m not sure they win this two years ago…team seems tougher nowadays…and these away games vs syracuse are never easy.

the announcer was debbie antonelli…she’s a former player at state, so basically a hater.

Debbie, Doris, Dumbass....same shit.

And that makes total sense that she played at State, she was a UNC hating moron with an IQ of 75...just their demographic.

That game last night might be the best win of the season so far. I know that seems strange but we had only won one previous away game and that was against dreadful Louisville. Winning on the road has proven tough not just for us but across the sport. So again, a road win is a good win.

Secondly, to lead the whole game and then to have it snatched from you in the closing minutes but to stay strong, composed and fight to steal it back is some serious grit. We caught a couple breaks but from where I sat, we were owed a couple breaks. More on that below.

I think a memo has been sent throughout the CBB world that it's open season on our guys. I've thought almost the entire year we are being effected disproportionately by the officiating. Refs are allowing super physical play against Mando and it's wrong. Or if you're going to allow that physical play against Mando, then allow the same on the other end. Also, our guards were held and handchecked all night. I will acknowledge that we have some softer than average players in Love, Leaky and Nance. They're not very good about being able to absorb contact and still finish. We could have done some barking at the refs last night and we mostly avoided that. Both of the Love charges in the first half were suspect. The first one was a downright bad call. The second was iffy. * side note* - those were the only two Love TOs last night.

Lastly, playing against that zone is tough. We don't see it often and Syracuse is professional about it. They've mastered that shit. And early on, we were cutting them up with precision.

So again, I view last night a great win and a game that could potentially springboard our team. I'm hesitantly optimistic.

A few other thoughts:

Nickel had himself a game. He had a big 3, a big rebound and a big block. But aside from that, he had some really good passes into the teeth of that zone and made the defense react. His size was helpful in seeing over the zone and I'm certain that's why Hubert played him as much as he did. RJ getting beat up and Nickel being a threat from deep helped.

Love was as good as he's been this year. Not a big scoring night but 15 points on 7 shots is awesome. He still took a really bad 3 and a terrible runner but we're just gonna have to live with that from him. The threes he made in the first half were catch and shoot from inside-out play. He shot in rhythm and they weren't hero shots. And as stated above, he mostly protected the ball and made good passes. His pass to Nickel for the 3 was beautiful.

ETA - and yeah, Doris the Finkasuarus is rotten at her job.

All true. Great post. I guess the woman announcer is some NCSU women's bb grad. Terrible nevertheless.

The way Mando gets mugged almost every game, with few calls, is getting near Shaq-level mistreatment.

I'd love for Nickel to step up more and get more chances on offense, but he still has a LONG way to go on defense. Most guys on this team do. But it was Nickel and Nance who got beat full length of the court after a UNC made fast break basket by Bacot, for a dunk by Cuse. Nickel (and Nance) weren't guarding anyone, let a guy get behind them. Slow and lazy. And Nickel often looks lost, like he's not guarding anyone but the paint in a man-to-man defense.

Way too often our guys leave their feet to try to block a shot on a perimeter jump shooter. How often does that work, without a foul or a pump fake for wide open shot or drive? Very rare. Most guys could get a lot better at staying on their feet, stay in front of your guy, hand in his face...and...

is it too much to ask when guarding a guy on the perimeter - to hustle and take the one extra step out to actually defend someone on the 3 line, instead of staying back and trying to prevent getting blown by on the drive? Looking at you, Caleb. Though yes, Caleb did have a quite good offensive game last night.

Monmouth Hawks are 1-19 this season! King Rice's team hasn't won a game in almost 2 months!
Oh no! Absolutely love King Rice as a man and a loyal UNC alum. He must not have the guys. He can coach and he had his teams in tourney a while ago iirc. Maybe transfer portal hit them hard or he’s missed on recruits?

Just thinking out loud- would he be someone to consider adding to HD UNC staff at some point if available? I have to think he’d add at least as much as guys on the staff who have never been head coaches. Maybe he could be a defensive specialist coach

Billy Packer dead at 82.
there's a thread on radar about it, and in it I said that his broadcasts as color guy along with Jim Thackers excellent play-by-play was the best college BB watching there's ever been. Billy could be obnoxious and opinionated and he was considered by many to be a UNC-hater, but if you could get around that, he added a ton to any broadcast. I carry many fond memories of those Saturdays watching them.

I didn't wanna create a fervor on THR. I don't think (didn't think) UNC wins tonight or on Saturday.

Truth be told, I don't think this UNC team is all that good. Time will tell.

i thought they were about to go a significant run quite honestly…this is surprising to me.

again, carolina is getting bullied and worse, falling for it.

Bubble team

And, I keep thinking of that SI Cover facsimile before the season started. Whatever dumbass thought that up needs to have his ass kicked.

i think they are going on a run…shot selection tonight was terrible but maybe they felt panicked because they were bullied…i don’t get it, but it seems to get calmer in tournaments.

they’ll win saturday and maybe lose at state…state is playing well.

or maybe i’m dreaming this and they win the acct and lose in the 1st round.

I see you are coping with the loss by drinking.

Basketball games, for me, are just like the football games. I expect them to lose and pleasantly surprised when they win. Expectations are very low.

Yeah, that's a stretch. He had to go out of his way to make that about him.

Shitty and embarrassing that we lost that game. Looking like we are who we thought we were.

BTW this is maybe the #1 all time classic post game meltdowns by comedy clown of a coach Denny Green. Makes me laugh every time I see it.
